As a long-time fan of Doctor Who, I must say that the anticipation for season 15 is palpable! With Russell T Davies at the helm once again, we can expect a rollercoaster of emotions, mind-bending plot twists, and a few surprises along the way.
Warning – contains spoilers for Doctor Who season 14.
Fans of Doctor Who eagerly anticipate the upcoming Christmas special, titled Joy to the World, and have something extra to be excited about: the following complete season of the series has already been recorded for broadcast.
Following the airing of the remarkable fourteenth season earlier in the year, the upcoming series is set to bring fans back together with Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor. During this run, he will be accompanied by a fresh companion, Belinda Chandra, portrayed by Varada Sethu.
Millie Gibson is set to reappear as Ruby Sunday despite their emotional goodbye, resulting in a TARDIS trio alongside three other actors.
Indeed, while many details remain secret, there’s been an abundance of behind-the-scenes photos and hints from our showrunner, Russell T Davies. As a result, we have a good idea of what exciting things are in store for us.
Here’s everything we know about Doctor Who season 15!
Doctor Who season 15 release date speculation
We’re expecting Doctor Who season 15 to air in May 2025.
In an interview with The Big Issue, Russell T Davies recently mentioned the timeframe for a new Doctor Who episode, stating: “I’m feeling quite energized today since I handed off a Doctor Who script this morning, which is set to air in May 2025.”
That would mean season 15 airs pretty much exactly a year after season 14.
Earlier in May, Davies confirmed that production on season 15 has wrapped.
“He posted on Instagram that Season 2 is now wrapped up, congratulations to everyone! The wrap party was held, as evidenced by this picture he shared featuring him alongside Michelle Greenidge, a regular character who portrays Ruby’s adoptive mom, Carla.”
In October 2023, it was announced that filming had started on Gatwa’s second season.
Excitedly gearing up here! Today’s the day we begin filming Ncuti Gatwa’s next adventure as The Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’! 🎬

Filming went on to conclude on 26th May 2024.
In August 2024, Jane Tranter, the executive producer, shared with Deadline that their production company, Bad Wolf, is deep in the editing process for the upcoming season. She further mentioned that, given the stage they’re at, it won’t be released for another year or so.
Who will star in Doctor Who season 15?
Here are the cast members we currently know will be starring in Doctor Who season 15.
- Ncuti Gatwa as The Fifteenth Doctor
- Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday
- Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra
- Jonah Hauer-King as TBC
- Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart
- Bonnie Langford as Melanie Bush
- Ruth Madeley as Shirley Anne Bingham
- Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim
- Michelle Greenidge as Carla Sunday
- Angela Wynter as Cherry Sunday
- Anita Dobson as Mrs Flood
Originally, Gatwa had assured that he would continue with Doctor Who for at least two seasons, as he shared with Rolling Stone: “Theatre has been my refuge, even when I was struggling financially. However, I intend to return to it after completing the second season of Doctor Who.” (In this version, I’ve attempted to maintain the original structure while using simpler language and making the sentence flow more smoothly.)
In addition, it’s been verified that actor Sethu from Andor has been chosen to be the latest traveling partner of the Doctor, known as Belinda Chandra. At this point, we don’t have many details about her, but she’s been seen filming alongside Gatwa, hinting at a thrilling Las Vegas escapade!
In the Steven Moffat-written episode titled ‘Boom’, Sethu first appeared as character Mundy Flynn in a guest spot; however, it remains undecided whether her upcoming role is linked to Mundy.
When questioned by The Hollywood Reporter regarding the meaning behind the character’s name, Mundy (like “Monday”), Moffat playfully evaded: “I believe I’ll keep silent on that matter. I’ll keep silent about what’s happening there. You won’t be getting any answers from me just yet. It’s Russell who has the plan, and he will disclose the details of how it unfolds at his own pace, I’m confident.”
In addition, it’s been noted that Gibson will have a lesser part in season 15, which might be intriguing since it could provide insights into Ruby’s daily life outside of her escapades alongside the Doctor.
Based on how season 14 ended, with the Empire of Death finale, it’s logical that this is the case because in that episode, Ruby discovered her birth mother, Louise, and was about to uncover her birth father, William.
Instead of staying put to familiarize herself with them and resume her life on Earth, it’s clear that she chose to remain there temporarily. However, we can expect her return at some stage during Season 15, as hinted by Russell T Davies who promises additional tales for Ruby and her kin.
During San Diego Comic Con, it was later verified by Davies that Ruby will not find a permanent home in season 15. Additionally, he revealed that Ruby will grapple with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in upcoming episodes, stemming from her experiences in season 14.
In my humble opinion as a movie aficionado, I recently noticed Gibson and Jonah Hauer-King sharing the silver screen together, with the latter seemingly portraying a romantic interest for the captivating Ruby. During Comic Con, it was officially announced that Hauer-King’s character will be deeply intertwined in the intriguing narrative of Ruby’s upcoming season 2.
additionally, there are hints about who might appear, as well as a familiar figure expected to make an appearance in the anniversary installment.
On a bustling day for Block 2, actors Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson interacted with writers in preparation for a script reading session. Later in the day, they had an afternoon rehearsal that included an actor who could be recognized by Doctor Who enthusiasts as someone who previously starred in a special anniversary production.
Moreover, many characters who appeared in season 14 are expected to continue in the upcoming season. This includes Ruby’s family members, such as her adoptive mother Carla, portrayed by Michelle Greenidge, and her grandmother Cherry, played by Angela Wynter.
In the upcoming episodes, we’ll encounter once more the enigmatic and omniscient neighbor of Ruby, Mrs. Flood, portrayed by Anita Dobson. Last season left us with unanswered questions about her, but it seems that we’ll uncover more details now.
In simpler terms, it appears that Bonnie Langford, a well-known companion from the classic Doctor Who series, is expected to reappear along with other recurring UNIT characters such as Jemma Redgrave portraying Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient playing Colonel Ibrahim.
Ruth Madeley is additionally seen filming her role as UNIT’s scientific advisor, Shirley Anne Bingham, who debuted in the 60th anniversary episodes yet was missing during season 14.
It’s unclear at this point whether Yasmin Finney as Rose Noble, Lenny Rush as Morris Gibbons, or Susan Twist as Susan Triad will bring us returns in their roles.
Regarding the cast for the upcoming 2024 Christmas special, it’s been announced that Nicola Coughlan, known for her role in Derry Girls, will be joining the show. As of now, specifics about her character have yet to be disclosed.
I’ve also noticed that actors Joel Fry and Blake Patrick Anderson have been seen on set, capturing their scenes for the upcoming episodes.
Fans eagerly anticipate seeing Jonathan Groff reprise his role as Rogue, the character who captured the Doctor’s heart in season 14, only to be separated from him later on. However, hints have been dropped that Rogue might make a comeback for the bounty hunter at some point in the future.
Groff appeared eager to reprise his role in future installments of Doctor Who, as he explicitly expressed during the most recent episode of Doctor Who: Unveiled.
“He mentions that we might encounter Rogue once more. Since Rogue instructed the Doctor to locate him in the final scene, the decision rests solely with the Doctor. In essence, the responsibility now lies with him.”
Will the Doctor and Rogue be reunited? We very much suspect so!
How many episodes will be in Doctor Who season 15?
In the upcoming year, Doctor Who’s season 15 will comprise a total of eight thrilling episodes, continuing the storyline directly after the 2024 Christmas Special titled “Joy to the World”.
In this arrangement, Alex Pillai takes charge of the initial set of episodes, which includes the exciting 2024 Christmas Special, while Peter Hoar assumes direction for the subsequent episodes.
He stated: “I spent time with [Russell] last night, and someone inquired the identical question, ‘So, are you planning to work on Doctor Who together?’ To which I responded, ‘No,’ but it’s a fact. The skepticism was palpable, yet it holds true.”
“I grew up with Doctor Who, hence why I would do it again.”
Other directors for the season include Amanda Brotchie, Ben A. Williams, and Makalla McPherson.
Similar to last season, I’ll be airing on BBC One in the UK, and for those of you abroad, you can catch me on Disney Plus.
Who is writing for Doctor Who season 15?
In my humble opinion, as a movie reviewer, it’s truly exciting to see the masterful showrunner Russell T Davies back at the helm for the 2025 series. He was instrumental in crafting all three of the 60th anniversary specials and six out of the eight episodes in the fourteenth season, and his return promises a continuation of that exceptional storytelling.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share some intriguing details about the making of one of my favorite shows. While the exact number of episodes penned by Davies himself remains a mystery, it is confirmed that four other talented writers joined forces for Ncuti Gatwa’s second season.
In the past, the showrunner known as Steven Moffat came back for season 14 and penned the episode called Boom. Later on, he also wrote the 2024 Christmas Special, which was named Joy to the World.
What could Doctor Who season 15 be about?
While specifics about Season 15’s storyline are scarce given its distance, creator Davies has provided hints in the past that we can rely on. Additionally, insights from the ending of Season 14 may prove helpful as we speculate what might happen next.
In the last episode of season 14 titled “Empire of Death,” our hero, The Doctor, successfully vanquished Sutekh, seemingly ending his existence permanently. Afterward, The Doctor and Ruby employed DNA tracing from the year 2046 to locate Ruby’s mother. To their surprise, her mother was an ordinary woman—a nurse who, as a young teen, abandoned Ruby due to concerns she couldn’t safeguard her daughter from her step-father, who posed a threat.
Emboldened by this newfound wisdom, I joined forces with Ruby in pursuit of her mother. Upon meeting, I proudly identified myself. As our relationship deepened, forming a cohesive family unit with Carla and Cherry, Ruby’s father William became our focus. However, it became evident that I would need to remain here, as our journey required my presence.
After saying their emotional goodbyes, the Doctor embarked on a solo journey, but here’s an intriguing hint: Russell T Davies has given us a sneak peek that the saga of Ruby Sunday, along with her unique family setup, isn’t over yet.
It appears that during season 15, the Doctor is expected to encounter Varada Sethu’s associate at the beginning of the season, following a single adventure with Nicola Coughlan’s character in the Christmas episode. Later on, he will reunite with Ruby around the middle of the season, mirroring his relationship with Donna and Martha from season 4.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m eagerly anticipating Season 15 because it might shed light on the enigmatic character of Mrs. Flood, and perhaps warn us about potential perils brewing from the Pantheon of Discord.
Plus, we need The Doctor to reunite with Rogue at some point!
In an interview with The Big Issue, Davies shared that season 15 features something entirely novel: activities we’ve never attempted before. He mentioned that the scriptwriting was particularly challenging for him.
“This episode was so confusing, I needed to include a diagram to help clarify the events! In all my years, I’ve never had to do that before.”
Earlier, he hinted that an upcoming episode might feature the terms “garden,” “sky dome” (alternative for “firmament”), and “certificate” – not a lot of information, but it’s enough to spark curiosity among fans as they ponder what this could mean.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but get excited when I hear that Steven Moffat has already read the script for the Season 15 finale! This revelation has sparked a flurry of speculation among us fans about what incredible events might unfold in the upcoming episode.
Moffat shared with TV Choice magazine that although he hasn’t yet seen the final episode of season 14, it turns out that he has already read the script for the subsequent season finale – a fact he hinted mysteriously would make sense later on.
Given that Moffat hinted during the same interview that his 2024 Christmas special titled “Joy to the World” might be his final writing venture for Doctor Who, we may wonder why he would read the script for the Season 15 finale.
As a devoted fan, I’ve been intrigued by a buzzing speculation: Davies might be planning to resurrect one of Moffat’s iconic creatures. With such an extensive gallery to pick from, it’s hard not to be captivated by the Weeping Angels, the enigmatic Silence, and the charismatic Missy portrayed by Michelle Gomez.
Instead, there’s speculation that the character being reintroduced could be one previously created by Moffat. For now, fans are left in suspense, eagerly awaiting the reveal.
