Hi-Fi RUSH was an exceptionally enjoyable, unexpected, and captivating game that Xbox hasn’t seen in a long time, and it raised expectations for games in 2023. When Microsoft revealed that Tango Gameworks, the Japanese studio behind Hi-Fi RUSH, was shutting down, I wasn’t the only one who felt heartbroken by this news. The entertainment industry is losing more talented individuals, and gamers are now deprived of the possibility of a sequel for Hi-Fi RUSH.
With the exciting news that Tango Gameworks has now been bought by publisher Krafton from Xbox, Hi-Fi RUSH gets another opportunity to shine! The ownership of Hi-Fi RUSH’s intellectual property also transfers to Krafton, which means that Tango can focus on developing this game into something exceptional. Although the Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo franchises will continue with Xbox (and are still seeking a home), it’s heartening to see Tango being given another chance to thrive. While I wish they never faced the risk of closure in the first place, I can’t help but rejoice at this development!
It’s not surprising at all, given the glowing review I gave to Hi-Fi RUSH last year. In that review, I raved about its distinctive rhythm-brawler style, stunning cel-shaded visuals, and outstanding art design. The gameplay was easy to grasp yet challenging, with a rhythm-based action that kept me engaged. What truly set it apart, though, was the heartfelt story backed by an authentic cast of characters, making it my Game of the Year for 2023. Interviewing Hi-Fi RUSH’s game director, John Johanas, remains one of the most rewarding moments in my career.
As a tech enthusiast, I can’t hide my excitement about the upcoming follow-up to one of the finest Xbox games in recent memory. Tango Gameworks’ new home has essentially confirmed its development, though we won’t get our hands on it for quite some time. However, I can’t deny that the wait will be excruciating – but I have faith it will be more than worthwhile.
