Assassin’s Creed Shadows Dev Team “Could Really Deliver on Our Vision” Thanks to Updated Engine

As a lifelong fan of the Assassin’s Creed series, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and relief that Ubisoft has finally decided to set a game in feudal Japan with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. After years of eagerly anticipating this setting, it seems that the wait was worth it as the advancements in current-gen hardware and the updated Anvil engine have allowed the development team to truly bring their vision to life.

For a while now, fans of the Assassin’s Creed series have eagerly anticipated a game set in feudal Japan. Luckily, this year, Ubisoft is delivering on their expectations with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Surprisingly, the developers mentioned that older hardware limitations would not have been capable of portraying the setting justicefully. It is due to recent advancements in technology that Assassin’s Creed is now able to explore Japan.

As a gamer, I’ve been chatting with GamesIndustry about the future of Assassin’s Creed, and Karl Onnée, the lead producer, shared some exciting news. Ubisoft has been keenly considering the perfect moment to introduce a Japanese setting in an Assassin’s Creed game. With the power of current-gen hardware and the enhanced Anvil engine, our development team feels they can truly bring our vision for this project to life!

“Onnée mentioned, ‘This has been something we’ve long aspired to achieve, yet we sought the perfect timing. I believe other teams shared this desire as well.’ They found the chance because they had completed ‘Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’, giving them the necessary experience. However, it also seemed like the ideal moment due to their capabilities in terms of hardware and a revamped engine, enabling them to fully realize their vision. It was crucial for them to incorporate features like realistic lighting and shadows, which are resource-intensive. Additionally, they wanted dynamic weather conditions.”

In the presentations of Assassin’s Creed Shadows by Ubisoft, the shifting seasons and adaptive lighting systems, as highlighted by Onnée, have been a key focus. These elements are confirmed to influence the game world in substantial ways dynamically. As for the size, it appears that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be comparable to Assassin’s Creed Origins, which means a more compact world compared to Odyssey and Valhalla. However, based on Onnée’s observations, the complexity and density of this game seem to have been increased significantly by Ubisoft.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is due out on November 15 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
