As a seasoned gamer with years of immersing myself in various virtual worlds and narratives, I can wholeheartedly relate to Cate Blanchett‘s experiences while working on Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok. The concept of “working backwards” to construct a narrative around key moments, much like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle, echoes the non-linear storytelling I often encounter in my favorite video games.
Cate Blanchett, known for her captivating villain role in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, admitted that working on the film presented a significant learning curve which she found herself grappling with even during the production of her recent project, Borderlands. In an interview with GQ about her most iconic roles, Blanchett shared that Marvel Studios aren’t accustomed to having a complete script and often start filming once a few action sequences have been planned out. This approach, she explained, allows the studio more time to add effects later on, but she also referred to it as constructing the story backwards around key moments.
In the video (you can watch it below), Blanchett explains that Marvel isn’t typically accustomed to having an entire script. Instead, they usually jump into key scenes and then piece together the story from there. She described this as a complex puzzle. At the time, she didn’t realize that her character was the first female villain to be portrayed onscreen, but she knew that director Taika Waititi would bring his unique style to the role, and Chris Hemsworth was eager to collaborate and add humor to the mix, creating a lively, engaging atmosphere.
During our chat, Blanchett shared that she became part of the Ragnarok project due to her admiration for Waititi. She confessed that she wasn’t aware he would ask her to star in the film when they first met.
As a gamer putting forth my thoughts, I must admit that some comments may come across as blunt at first glance, but Cate Blanchett doesn’t appear to be bothered by the process. She seems to suggest it’s just how Marvel operates their business, and she appears to have relished the experience. Interestingly, even after leaving the franchise, she has remained a keen observer, praising Natalie Portman’s remarkable physique in the latest release, “Love and Thunder.”
In the movie “Thor: Ragnarok”, Loki, Thor’s cunning sibling, seizes control of Asgard. Meanwhile, the formidable Hela rises to claim the throne for herself. Thor finds himself imprisoned on the opposite end of the universe. To break free and prevent Asgard from being destroyed, Thor must initially succeed in a lethal intergalactic competition by overcoming his erstwhile comrade and fellow Avenger – the mighty Hulk!
You can get the movie on disc, digital, or stream it on Disney+.
