New Ghostbusters Animated Series Ordered at Netflix

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for nostalgia and a knack for spotting quality productions, I must say that Netflix’s new Ghostbusters animated series has me buzzing with excitement! Having grown up on the original films and cartoons, this news feels like a dream come true.

Netflix isn’t shying away from greenlights: The streaming service has officially commissioned a new animated Ghostbusters series. Titled as yet, this project has been in development at Netflix since 2022, with 3D animation being the chosen style. Ghost Corps, Inc., based at Sony, is producing the show. According to Variety, Elliott Kalan – four-time Emmy winner and former writer for The Daily Show – will be taking on the roles of writer, showrunner, and executive producer for this animated series produced by Sony Pictures Animation in collaboration with Netflix and Ghost Corps.

As a passionate gamer, I’m excited to share some insider news about the upcoming animated series of the iconic Ghostbusters franchise! Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman, the original director, and co-head of Ghost Corps alongside franchise creator Dan Aykroyd, is executive producing this project with Gil Kenan through Ghost Corps.

In his recent conversation with ComicBook, Kenan shared an exciting update. He’s had a sneak peek at the sets and environments for the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series, which is currently under active development. What he’s seen so far hints at a world filled with supernatural characters brought to life by our exceptional creative team. All he could muster was an enthusiastic confirmation of the ongoing work.

“Kenan mentioned that scripts are being developed, artwork is being produced, and it’s an exciting period for anyone who’s a Ghostbuster.”

It’s uncertain whether the upcoming Netflix ‘Ghostbusters’ series will focus on the Spengler family, consisting of Gary (Rudd), Egon’s daughter Callie (Coon), and her kids Trevor (Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Grace), or if it will feature the original Ghostbuster survivors. This new series is modeled after the ABC-aired ‘The Real Ghostbusters’, which spanned seven seasons from 1986 to 1991, later known as ‘Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters’. It also includes a spinoff, ‘Extreme Ghostbusters’, a sequel series that ran for one season in 1997 with an additional 40 episodes.

Previously, Kalan served as the chief writer for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” from 2008 to 2015. He also worked on “The Who Was? Show,” a kids’ historical live-action sketch comedy series on Netflix. His resume includes a 25-episode stint on Netflix’s reboot of “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” the animated Netflix series “Harvey Girls Forever!,” and episodes for the Fox animated sitcom “HouseBroken.”
