As a seasoned gamer and ardent fan of the Terminator franchise, I find myself intrigued by the upcoming anime series, Terminator Zero. Having followed the saga since its inception, it’s fascinating to witness how the narrative evolves beyond the creative mind of James Cameron.
The last major installment in the Terminator franchise was 2018’s Terminator: Dark Fate, and even though that movie featured key figures from the franchise’s history and earned promising critical reactions, it earned an underwhelming performance at the box office and failed to revive the series. The anime series Terminator Zero will be the next major entry in the franchise, though creator of the franchise James Cameron recently confirmed that the show has no substantial connection to any ideas he has toyed with and that he’s currently working on something for the saga. The filmmaker even went on to joke that, were he to reveal any information about it, he’d have to send out some Terminators of his own.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron expressed his intrigue about the new anime, stating that it reminded him of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. He finds it captivating to observe others weaving tales in a universe he initiated. He wonders about their interpretation, what drew them to this story, and where they are headed with it. It appears they’re delving into the origins of Judgment Day – the nuclear war – and whether or not that serves as the ultimate timeline. His curiosity is piqued by wanting to see what creative direction they have taken.
He mentioned, “At the moment, I’m developing ideas similar to ‘The Terminator.’ However, this is unrelated to what you might think. Occasionally, ‘The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ touched on concepts I had been exploring independently. So, there’s a bit of interest there. It’s not an intense interest, but, undeniably, it would be pleasing to see it thrive.”
In 2008, The Sarah Connor Chronicles made its debut, acting as a continuation of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Although James Cameron wasn’t directly involved, the show received generally favorable criticism and featured Lena Headey before she gained fame in Game of Thrones.
When someone inquired about the focus of Cameron’s project, he playfully responded, “I can’t reveal that information, or else I might need to deploy a risky robot, either now or later, due to your discussion.”
As a gamer putting my thoughts out there, I gotta say, it’s fascinating that Cameron was personally involved with “Dark Fate”. Yet, it didn’t exactly spark a comeback for the franchise like we hoped. Considering the skepticism he encountered while working on his follow-ups to “Avatar”, it’s tough not to acknowledge the impact of his storytelling prowess.
Terminator Zero hits Netflix on August 29th.
