As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Black Myth: Wukong has truly caught my attention. The intricate details and impressive visuals are simply astounding, reminding me of some of the best action titles I’ve ever played.
Black Myth: Wukong, revealed years ago by Game Science, has consistently impressed with its visuals, and we’ll be able to experience it firsthand when it launches on August 20th for PS5 and PC. There’s a lot to anticipate, from the abundance of boss battles and their diverse nature to the narrative that draws heavily from Journey to the West. Beyond that lies the combat and RPG systems, featuring transformations, stances, armor sets, bonuses, and much more.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but marvel at the intricacies of “Black Myth: Wukong”. While the visuals are undeniably stunning, they also brim with subtle nuances that reward repeated viewings. Here are 11 captivating details from this title that caught my eye before its launch.
Realistic Foliage, Lighting and Shadows
Black Myth: Wukong was already an eye-catching title upon its initial unveiling in September, but since the transition to Unreal Engine 5, Game Science has raised the bar even higher. So far, we’ve witnessed intricate vegetation that casts lifelike shadows on the surroundings, leaves that drift realistically (and get rearranged during combat) among other enhancements. The lighting and shadow effects also stand out, ranging from a solitary beam of light streaming through a room to the vivid glow of fire illuminating the environment at night.
Water Reflections and Realistic Ripples
To further elaborate, the water adds to the scene. Leaves float gently on the surface of this water body, creating a breathtaking reflection that’s worth admiring. In the battle with Tiger Vanguard, we’ve witnessed lifelike liquid physics, particularly during combat in a massive pool of blood. As you move, the realism is maintained – whether it’s the boss shattering the ground or landing after a leap, the splashes and effects are impressive. The environment can even be seen mirrored in a red hue.
Blood Smudges and Realistic Fur
Discussing the Tiger Vanguard, an intriguing aspect becomes noticeable during combat. It’s not about his bloodthirsty actions such as drinking blood from the arena, but rather the way his mouth and claws are smeared with it. Additionally, considering the furry character of this boss, it convincingly soils his fur. You might even observe his fur standing on end during battle. This detail, while perhaps anticipated due to the numerous other visual effects, is nonetheless a fantastic touch that underscores the ruthless nature of the Tiger Vanguard even more.
Maintaining Balance in Pillar Stance
As a gamer, I’ve found that The Chosen One employs some rather unusual strategies, such as shape-shifting abilities that let him adopt the forms and attacks of various bosses and foes. Yet, what truly piques my curiosity is the Pillar Stance. In this move, our hero plunges his staff into the ground, then leaps upwards by extending it simultaneously, effectively using it as a springboard to soar skyward.
In combat on the ground, this tool offers robust protection against wide-range attacks, as demonstrated during battles with dragons on frozen bodies of water. Interestingly, it’s worth noting that he grasps the staff using his toes, which aids in maintaining balance and allows for quick maneuvers, such as delivering powerful strikes. It remains to be seen whether there will be additional instances or stances where the main character uses his feet to handle enemies later in the game. We’ll just have to keep playing to find out.
Perfect Dodges and Afterimages
One striking feature, which leaves an indelible impact, is the trail left behind after a flawless dodge. This maneuver momentarily freezes time, allowing The Chosen One to land a hit or reposition. The idea of moving so swiftly that opponents see him as stationary aligns with logic. It’s a fleeting instantaneous event, mainly to maintain the game’s rapid tempo, and it embellishes combat, making it more captivating compared to other action games’ perfect dodge animations.
Black Wind Demon’s Movement
An intriguing boss character is reminiscent of Heifeng Guai from “Journey to the West,” appearing as a fierce, bear-like creature. His assaults are powerful and intimidating, yet his unique trait – the capacity to metamorphose into wind and revert back to his bear form for swift attacks – aligns perfectly with his title. This transformation not only allows him to navigate the arena but also to pursue or retaliate against the Chosen One. Given his power to transform, it’s plausible to spot what appears to be the robe from Tang Sanzang, a character in the novel, which was supposedly stolen by this demon.
Snowfall Realistically Accumulates on Characters
As a devoted follower, I’d express it like this: My odyssey, marked as the Chosen One, leads me through enchanting woodlands and desolate spots, eventually up to snow-capped peaks. When winter comes, snowflakes blanket us all, turning our garb – armor, fur, feathers, you name it – into a stunning white canvas. Miraculously, I’m immune to the chilling effects of hypothermia, but the sight of snow-dusted enemies and formidable foes is truly breathtaking!
Realistic Snow Deformation
As a fan, I must say that the snowfall in Black Myth: Wukong is visually appealing, but what truly sets it apart is how it interacts realistically with the characters. When moving around, the snow deforms beneath us, creating a sense of immersion that’s hard to match. It’s thrilling to watch the snow fly up when enemies strike the ground, but what really takes my breath away is seeing it subtly shift in response to my movements. I wouldn’t be surprised if we could see footprints from combatants in the snow too, especially during intense boss fights like the one against the Macaque Chief. Even with all the chaos, there’s a beauty to be found in the way the snow responds to every action, making each moment feel unique and engaging.
Fire, Embers and Smoke
In the game, fire is realistically depicted, such as when particles create embers and enemies catch fire when hit with burn damage. When fighting Guangzhi, the wolf-like warrior armed with a fiery staff, you’ll observe smoke billowing from his weapon. This effect isn’t too apparent while moving around, but it becomes more noticeable during twirls and attacks, adding realism (while still ensuring visibility for players). Interestingly, no smoke is produced when the Tiger Vanguard catches fire, which might be due to limitations in the current version, though I wouldn’t be surprised if this detail is included in the initial release.
Shrines and The Destined One’s Hair
In contrast to being a Souls-like game, Black Myth: Wukong incorporates its unique version of a Bonfire system, which are referred to as Shrines. These Shrines offer the opportunity to rest and replenish health, respawn enemies for combat, provide fast travel options, and serve as checkpoints where you can return after death. Upon activation, the protagonist, the Destined One, removes a hair from their head that transforms into incense, revitalizing the Shrine and removing any accumulated dust. This feature in the game mirrors Sun Wukong’s hair from Journey to the West, which had various abilities, such as creating duplicates. This mechanism aligns with the game’s respawning mechanic, suggesting that the Destined One may be making a duplicate of himself instead of dying.
Metal Against Metal
In the game Black Myth: Wukong, not just the visual aspects are well-crafted, but the sound design is impressive too. When you strike enemies, the sound of the Destined One’s staff, whether it’s a dull thud or a clang against metal bosses, is clear and fitting. Additionally, when striking a metallic boss, sparks fly and create small flashes, enhancing the immersion in this already engaging game.
