Anthony Bourdain Biopic Targets The Holdovers Dominic Sessa to Star

As a long-time fan who has followed Anthony Bourdain‘s incredible journey from the kitchen to the small screen, I must say, I am both excited and apprehensive about Dominic Sessa taking on this role. While Sessa may not be a household name yet, his upcoming projects suggest that he’s got the chops to bring Tony to life.

Actor Dominic Sessa, known for his role in “The Holdovers”, is in negotiations to portray Anthony Bourdain in an upcoming biopic directed by Matt Johnson. This year, Sessa has been one of the busiest actors in Hollywood, and he’s now set to take on the lead role in “Tony”, produced by Star Thrower Entertainment. The specific aspects of the story, such as which phase of Bourdain’s life the film will focus on, are yet to be determined. However, the project is being developed by producers Tim and Trevor White, along with Matt Miller. Johnson will direct based on a screenplay written by Lou Howe and Todd Bartels, while Emily Rose will serve as executive producer.

According to Deadline, initial reports suggest that A24, known for producing the biopic “Priscilla,” is in discussions about acquiring the film for distribution. Notably, Star Thrower, which produced the Oscar-winning biopic “King Richard,” was responsible for Johnson’s latest movie titled “Blackberry.”

In the 1980s and 1990s, Bourdain gained local fame in Manhattan after working at various restaurants. However, it was an essay for The New Yorker that exposed the gritty side of New York’s restaurant scene which catapulted him to prominence. Later, his book titled “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly” further boosted his popularity. His straightforward and witty style endeared him to the media, leading him to television work.

Anthony Bourdain initially embarked on a culinary journey with A Cook’s Tour, airing over 35 episodes on Food Network. Later in 2005, he took the helm of Travel Channel’s Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, which ran from 2005 to 2012 and gained him widespread recognition. Following this, he stayed with Travel Channel for The Layover (2011-2013) before shifting to CNN for Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. Throughout these series, food and travel were intertwined, offering many viewers an unprecedented glimpse into diverse cultures and cuisines outside of their daily lives. Alongside his television work, he also penned numerous books on gastronomy, cooking, and exploration, including the graphic novels Get Jiro! , now in development as an Adult Swim series.

Bourdain died in 2018.

Apart from the critically acclaimed film “The Holdovers,” where Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph were both nominated (with Da’Vine winning) at the Oscars, Sessa is relatively unrecognized by many cinema-goers. Upcoming projects featuring this lesser-known actor include the movie “Tow” starring Rose Byrne, directed by Stephanie Laing of Veep fame, Michael Showalter’s “Oh. What. Fun.”, and the third installment of “Now You See Me.”
