As a seasoned gamer of TV shows, I must say that the new trailer for Only Murders in the Building season 4 has sent my detective senses tingling! The prospect of Charles, Oliver, and Mabel traversing the glamorous landscape of Hollywood to solve yet another intriguing mystery is simply enticing.
The latest trailer for season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building” poses this question: Who was responsible for Sazz Pataki’s murder? After Charles’ stunt double, played by Jane Lynch, was fatally shot at the Arconia in the final scene of season 3, the trio consisting of Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selina Gomez) embarks on a journey to Los Angeles. Their investigation delves into whether Sazz or Charles was the intended target. As they explore this mystery, they encounter a Hollywood producer (Molly Shannon from “Saturday Night Live”), who is preparing a movie about the “Only Murders” true crime podcast.
The sleuths find themselves in close proximity to the leading actors of the Only Murders in the Building film: Emmy winner Eugene Levy (Schitt’s Creek) as Charles, Golden Globe nominee Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) as Mabel, and Emmy nominee Zach Galifianakis (Baskets) as Oliver, who mixes up The Hangover star with “the boy from Home Alone.”
After much investigation, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel find themselves back in New York City. This city serves as the starting point for an extraordinary adventure that takes them through their building’s courtyard. Their destination? The intricate lives of the residents living in the West Tower of the Arconia, with Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) being one of the key characters they encounter along the way.
In the upcoming season, Meryl Streep, who previously played Loretta Durkin in season 3, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph reprising her role as Detective Donna Williams are set to return. Joining them as guest stars are Kumail Nanjiani (known for his work in ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’), Richard Kind (‘Spin City’), and Melissa McCarthy (‘Bridesmaids’) who will portray Charles’ sister. Similar to previous mystery victims, Lynch will be featured throughout the 10-episode fourth season.
John Hoffman, one of the series co-creators and showrunners, earlier spoke about the season-ending demise to The Hollywood Reporter. Despite Sazz, played by Lynch, becoming a beloved character since their introduction in the first season, Jess Rosenthal, an executive producer, proposed killing off Charles’ doppelganger “Brazzos” as a surprising plot twist to prepare for the fourth season set in Hollywood.
Hoffman stated, “‘What if?’ sparked an immediate reaction of ‘That’s terrible, yet brilliant,’ in me. As soon as I heard it, my mind began to overflow with new ideas. In other words, this question ignited a surge of creativity in me, making it incredibly exciting.”
Only Murders in the Building season 4 premieres August 27th on Hulu.
