What you need to know
- Microsoft Teams has a new expanded gallery view when using the minimized meeting window.
- The minimized meeting window is a small window that stays at the top of Microsoft Teams when you need to navigate to other parts of the app.
- The new features are available for Windows and macOS users who are members of the Teams Public Preview or Microsoft 365 Targeted release.
As a seasoned analyst with years of experience navigating the dynamic landscape of technology, I must say that Microsoft’s latest update for Teams is nothing short of impressive. Having participated in numerous virtual meetings and conferences over the past couple of years, I can attest to the importance of maintaining a clear overview of participants during these sessions.
Microsoft aims to simplify managing your Teams meetings by allowing Microsoft 365 Insiders to trial an enhanced layout for presenters and attendees. This updated design includes a wider gallery display within Teams, capable of showing up to four participants and a ‘Me Video’ tile. However, the default setting remains as a single-tile view showcasing only the active speaker.
As a tech enthusiast, I love how during a Teams meeting, I can keep a compact meeting interface pinned atop my screen while exploring other functionalities of the app. This handy tool displays fellow participants, their reactions, raised hands, and even a peek of my own video feed – all in one place! And here’s the best part: with the updated gallery view, I can now see more meeting attendees within this compact window, making it easier to stay connected with everyone.
Here are some of the things you can do with the expanded gallery view, as listed by Microsoft:
- See more participants in the current meeting (up to 4).
- Be aware of raised hands from participants and be able to lower them.
- See reactions from participants.
- Directly mute noisy participants.
- See a preview of your own video.
- Receive relevant in-meeting notifications.
- Access relevant controls such as toggle AV modalities.
- Leave the meeting from the call monitor.
As a dedicated user, I love the convenience of adjusting my meeting window view. When my meeting screen is minimized, I simply navigate to the view switcher and opt for “Display Participant Gallery” to expand the view. Presenters will automatically see the expanded gallery by default, but they also have the freedom to switch to viewing just the active presenter or explore other choices if they prefer.
In order to access the latest view options in Teams, you should belong to either the Teams Public Preview group or the Microsoft 365 Targeted release. These innovative features can currently be found on Teams applications for both Windows and macOS systems.
