As a die-hard fan of the X-Men franchise from the early 2000s, seeing Aaron Stanford reprise his role as Pyro in Deadpool & Wolverine was like stepping into a time machine. It’s a bittersweet feeling knowing that we almost missed out on this delightful surprise due to the soft reboot that happened with X-Men: First Class.
In their latest adventure, Deadpool and Wolverine revived several beloved characters from the 2000s Marvel Universe movies by 20th Century Fox, such as actor Aaron Stanford reprising his role as John Allerdyce, a mutant capable of controlling flames known as “Pyro.” Pyro was a fan-adored antihero in the X-Men films, having left Charles Xavier’s school to join Magneto’s army. Unfortunately, like many actors from the original X-Men trilogy, Stanford was replaced when the franchise rebooted with X-Men: First Class, missing out on the comic book movie boom that swept Hollywood following the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Pyro serves as a significant lieutenant under Cassandra Nova, the wicked sister of Charles Xavier who is a ruler of the Void and collaborates with the Time Variance Authority (TVA). A surprising turn of events in the plot discloses that Pyro secretly works for a renegade TVA agent named Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen), spying on Nova while ensuring her elimination at the opportune moment. Regrettably, his scheme goes horribly wrong, and he pays a heavy price for his deceit when Cassandra Nova snaps his neck using her telekinetic abilities.
In their chat with Aaron Stanford during ComicBook’s Phase Zero, they inquired about his initial response upon discovering that Pyro’s character met his end in a pivotal scene.
“Stanford commented that he wasn’t taken aback by the turn of events since Pyro is the antagonist in this film. As expected, he’s the character we love to hate – the one who deserves a good body slam and some pain. Consequently, it was no shock to me at all when his neck was snapped… [and] discarded like trash.”
In essence, Aaron Stanford managed to secure a larger role in Deadpool & Wolverine compared to many other cameo actors – perhaps even surpassing well-known characters like Wesley Snipes’ Blade or Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm/Human Torch. Given that Stanford is a versatile character actor yet to achieve his major breakthrough, it’s likely he was eager to take on a larger part in Deadpool 3. And he certainly made the most of his chance with a commendable performance.
Deadpool & Wolverine is now in theaters.
