As a longtime Marvel fan and resident of the City of Angels, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and skepticism about the upcoming West Coast Avengers series. Having grown up with Ultron as one of the foremost villains, the idea of him joining forces with Earth’s mightiest heroes feels almost surreal.

In the final panel of Avengers #55 from 1968, Ultron, a self-aware robot, made a chilling declaration: “Each and every one of you shall perish… at my hands!” This was his first major appearance as the Crimson Cowl, where he gathered fellow Avengers enemies Klaw, Whirlwind, Radioactive Man, and Melter to create a new Masters of Evil. Their target was Hank Pym, whom Ultron considered as his creator. Later on, another incarnation of Ultron teamed up with other villains in the Lethal Legion when his creator interacted with the West Coast Avengers in 1985’s West Coast Avengers (Vol. 2) #1.

The relentless Ultron vows to bring destruction upon any beings labeled as Avengers, he declared to the team consisting of Iron Man, Hawkeye, Mockingbird, Tigra, and Wonder Man. Following that, his target will be those known as humans.

In the passage of time, Ultron is undergoing transformation once more: this time, he’s set to become one of Earth’s most powerful protectors. The revelation was made at San Diego Comic-Con by writers Gerry Duggan (of X-Men and Invincible Iron Man fame) and Danny Kim (known for Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance). To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the West Coast Avengers, these two are gathering the team anew. Alongside Iron Man (Tony Stark), War Machine (James Rhodes), Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), and mutant Firestar (Angelica Jones), a seemingly repentant Ultron will also be part of this heroic lineup.

“Reflections on redemption have dominated my thoughts this year, and it remains to be seen who will find redemption on the West Coast. This story offers an exhilarating action-packed journey, yet it’s also a unique Ultron narrative – one of my most ambitious Marvel projects thus far. Previously, I had the privilege of crafting an outstanding horror tale involving Ultron wearing Pym’s face, and this new tale features one of my favorite Marvel characters in one of my beloved legacy titles, set in the city that has been my home for so long. Keep an eye out for what Danny Kim is working on. Experience redemption in November amidst the city of angels.”

Title Summary: “Ultron reappears, seemingly reformed. A revamped Avengers team, featuring former villains seeking redemption, takes on this challenge, with Ultron as the primary test case. However, the question remains: can one’s transformation truly erase past actions? Spider-Woman and Firestar express reservations, while the ultimate forgiveness of Ultron’s past is debated.”

Prior to the release of the ongoing West Coast Avengers comic series on November 27th, Marvel Comics has unveiled four variant covers for issue #1. These include a standard cover by Sentry’s cover artist Ben Harvey, a New Avengers tribute variant by Kim, a Spider-Woman highlight cover by Jeehyung Lee (from Thor: God of Thunder), and an Ultron variant by Gerardo Sandoval (from Venom: Separation Anxiety).
