As a long-time fan of Obsidian Entertainment and their captivating narrative-driven RPGs, I find myself both excited and patiently waiting for the arrival of The Outer Worlds 2. Having played and loved The Outer Worlds, I am thrilled to hear that development on its sequel is progressing smoothly under the capable hands of Feargus Urquhart and his dedicated team.
Microsoft has consistently been offering updates about projects they announced years ago, such as Fable, State of Decay 3, and Perfect Dark. Yet, there are exceptions, like The Outer Worlds 2, which was unveiled in 2021. Despite Obsidian Entertainment being engrossed in Avowed, CEO Feargus Urquhart recently disclosed that the development of the sequel is progressing quite favorably.
During a recent conversation with Limit Break Network, Urquhart expressed his admiration for the team, stating, “They’re doing a fantastic job…We’ve had quite a bit of luck. Many of the people working on this game understand its essence, having worked on the original and been with us for a long time. To be honest, I’ve been genuinely impressed by their work.”
In addition, Urquhart mentioned that the creator encountered numerous challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic following its takeover by Microsoft. They were in the process of completing “The Outer Worlds”, developing DLC, progressing with “Avowed”, and initiating work on “The Outer Worlds 2” while simultaneously advancing “Grounded”. Meanwhile, Josh [Sawyer] was engaged in “Pentiment”. This translates to: The developer faced numerous difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic after being acquired by Microsoft. They were working on finishing “The Outer Worlds”, creating DLC, moving forward with “Avowed”, starting work on “The Outer Worlds 2”, and pushing ahead with “Grounded” while Josh [Sawyer] was busy with “Pentiment”.
“A lot has been going on, and it’s no secret that we struggled as developers for around a year and a half. There were discussions about potentially halting the progress on The Outer Worlds 2 and shifting the entire team to Avowed instead. At that time, Grounded hadn’t entered Early Access during these discussions.”
“He expressed gratitude towards Microsoft, the workforce, everyone involved, and emphasized their determination to deliver on the promised games, even if they won’t be released according to the initial schedules. He pointed out that ‘Grounded’, ‘Pentiment’, and ‘Avowed’ have turned out well, with ‘Avowed’ looking particularly impressive, and ‘The Outer Worlds 2’ appearing amazing.”
It’s been confirmed that “The Outer Worlds 2” will be available on Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms, but there is no set release date yet (and it seems unclear if it will also launch on PlayStation). The game has been in development since 2019, with Tim Cain, a co-creator of “Fallout,” joining as a consultant earlier this year.
Excitingly enough, I’ll get to experience “Avowed” firsthand starting February 18th, 2025, as it debuts for both Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms. A slight hold-up led to this delay, but the wait will be worth it! Additionally, we can anticipate seeing it at Gamescom later this month. Can’t wait!
