George Clooney Blasts "Miserable F--k" Director He Previously Worked With

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for both movies and behind-the-scenes drama, I can’t help but feel a mix of empathy and dismay when it comes to the saga of George Clooney and David O. Russell.

David O. Russell’s “Three Kings” marked a significant early role for George Clooney, but working with Russell isn’t always smooth sailing. In a recent interview, Clooney expressed that he wouldn’t collaborate with Russell again today. Known for movies like “I Heart Huckabees” and “American Hustle”, Russell has a reputation for being challenging to work with. He reportedly instigated a physical altercation with Clooney on set, and was captured on camera verbally abusing Lily Tomlin using profane, disrespectful language. According to Clooney, his issues with Russell were primarily about how Russell treated the crew, as they lack the same power to respond without fear of reprisal compared to the stars.

In a previously leaked email, journalist Jonathan Alter pointed out that Russell’s aggressive and irrational actions were exceptionally severe, even compared to typical Hollywood standards. This email came into existence following allegations years later, when Russell was accused of emotionally tormenting Amy Adams on the set of “The Silver Linings Playbook.”

As you grow older, the way time is allocated changes significantly, according to Clooney. Five months of your life are a considerable chunk. So, it’s no longer just about doing an excellent film like Three Kings, even if that means enduring a difficult director like David O. Russell who makes life miserable not only for you but also for everyone on the crew. At this stage in my life, it’s not worth it, he said, just to have a good product.

In that very interview, I, the gamer, jokingly poked fun at Quentin Tarantino, who had earlier criticized my acting career in one of his interviews. Yet, I conceded that collaborating with brilliant directors on solid scripts is essential to being a film star. Essentially, I said it’s much simpler to mess up a good script than it is to create a great movie from a poor one.

George Clooney’s conflict with Russell went far deeper than just the instance where they had a physical altercation. In 2004, George expressed to Premiere magazine that “To be honest, if he comes anywhere close to me, I’ll punch him squarely in the face.”

Similarly, Adams also hasn’t shied away from sharing her personal stories. She candidly shared with GQ in 2016 that he was tough on her, and it was indeed challenging. To put it plainly, she was deeply saddened while working on the set.

She said, “Jennifer Lawrence doesn’t let criticism stick to her, she’s like Teflon. I, on the other hand, am not invulnerable to such things. However, it bothers me when I see others being mistreated. In my opinion, that’s not acceptable…I value life over movies.”

Additionally, it’s worth noting that Russell found himself embroiled in a scandal outside the spotlight. In 2011, he openly confessed to inappropriately touching his transgender niece due to his curiosity about her breast augmentation procedure.
