Marvel Just Killed One of Its Best Characters Ever

As a longtime Marvel fan, I must say that the death of Danny Rand, also known as Iron Fist, has left me both shocked and saddened. Having followed his journey since his debut in 1974, it’s hard to believe that he’s finally met his end.

Characters in comics may appear and disappear, sometimes not used for long periods or even killed off to provide a new creative team with a clean slate. This appears to be what happened to a character who has been part of Marvel Comics for 50 years. Warning: Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special #1 spoilers ahead! Proceed cautiously if you haven’t read the comic yet.

Danny Rand, who first appeared in Marvel Premiere #15 back in 1974 and became the Immortal Iron Fist for five decades, has tragically perished. In the final scenes of this week’s Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special, written by Jason Loo and illustrated by Whilce Portacio, the ancient enemy Ch’i-Lin rises from the depths of the Eighth City to achieve his long-held ambition.

Reflecting on the epic saga of being the Immortal Iron Fist, it came to light that the mission of the Chi-Lin, those demons seeking chi, was to slay the Iron Fist on their 33rd birthday. Just like Danny Rand, I found myself battling and vanquishing these Chi-Lin demons to continue my life’s journey another day as The Living Weapon.

On his 34th birthday, instead of a typical celebration, Rand found himself in a completely different situation. Sharing this special day with longtime friends Luke Cage and Jeryn Hogarth seemed ordinary, until Ch’i-Lin from another realm dragged him away and viciously ended his life. To make matters worse, the demon also severed one of Rand’s legs during the attack.

Despite it seeming fruitless so far, there’s still hope since a “scene after the credits” hints at the character’s comeback by establishing a teaser at Rand’s grave. At this moment, Marvel doesn’t have any books featuring Danny Rand in their upcoming releases. Sadly, farewell Danny Rand–may you awaken from your eternal rest soon.
