Ryan Reynolds Shares How His Dad's Health Battle Affected Their Bond

As an ardent fan who has closely followed Ryan Reynolds‘ journey, it is truly heartwarming to see him reflect so candidly on his relationship with his father, James Chester Reynolds. The poignant essay he penned for People gives us a rare glimpse into the complexities of their bond and the profound impact of Parkinson’s disease on their interactions.

Ryan Reynolds is reflecting on an integral relationship in his life.

Approximately a decade since the passing of his father, James Chester Reynolds, at the age of 74, Ryan found himself reflecting on and examining the intricacies of their relationship, particularly in light of his father’s struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Having shared children – James, 9; Inez, 7; Betty, 4; and Olin, born in 2023 with Blake Lively – Ryan embarked on this introspective journey.

Ryan penned in an essay for People, published on August 14th, that it’s important to note his father wasn’t one to express his feelings. Despite being a dedicated and present father who never missed a football game, he simply lacked the ability or willingness to show a wide range of human emotions, with pride being something deeply ingrained in him, influencing almost every action he took.

The 47-year-old, who was the youngest among four brothers and son of Tammy Reynolds, shared that due to his father’s difficulty in expressing emotions, he found it challenging to fully comprehend his father during his battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Ryan clarified, acknowledging an unusual manifestation of the brain disorder. “My father seemed to be falling into a rabbit hole, finding it difficult to distinguish between what’s real and what’s imagined,” he said. “He would weave elaborate conspiracy theories about ‘this is happening,’ ‘these people are after me,’ or ‘this person is out to get me.’ These beliefs were so far removed from the man I grew up with and knew.”

But while his father’s disease contributed to their strained relationship, the Deadpool & Wolverine star also admitted he was partially to blame.

“In retrospect, it seemed simple for me to assume that my father and I had fundamentally different views on everything, making a meaningful relationship with him unattainable,” he reflected. “However, as I grew older, I began to realize that this was more about my reluctance at the time to connect with him on his terms. Perhaps I could have made an effort to understand him better and maybe even been there for him in his final days, but I didn’t. Over time, we simply grew apart, and that’s a regret I’ll carry with me always.”

Still, Ryan was able to get his own closure on the relationship by penning his father a letter prior to his death, detailing the things he loved about him. And now, the father of four is trying to break the cycle with his own parenting.

“He shared that the healing in his life is primarily found through his connection with his children, drawing on some precious lessons from his father. He finds it incredibly meaningful to connect with them at their level and offer reassurance, realizing that he’s somehow mended a bond with his own father in the process.”
