DC Announces New Black Canary Miniseries From Tom King and Ryan Sook

As a seasoned comic book enthusiast with over two decades of reading under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming “Black Canary: Best of the Best” series has piqued my interest significantly. The return of Dinah Lance to the solo spotlight is long overdue, and Tom King’s penchant for crafting intricate narratives makes this an exciting prospect.

In approximately a month and a half, one of DC’s most powerful heroines, Dinah Lance (Black Canary), will embark on a new solo adventure for the first time in nearly a decade. On November 27th, the publisher will release Black Canary: Best of the Best, a six-issue limited series authored by Tom King (known for his work on Mister Miracle and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) and illustrated by Ryan Sook (X-Factor, Challengers of the Unknown). The storyline centers around a significant test for Black Canary as she squares off against her recurring enemy, Lady Shiva, in an intense tribunal. King offered a sneak peek at the book on Tuesday via social media, indicating that it will delve deeply into the character’s development, similar to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The series is not connected to the upcoming DC All In continuity, where Black Canary already appears in the ongoing titles Birds of Prey and Green Arrow. The first issue of Black Canary: Best of the Best will go on sale on November 27th.

Black Canary, a character deeply rooted in DC Comics since the 1940s, has only had five standalone series to call her own. These individual titles were initially released in 1991, followed by another in 1992, then again in 2007 and 2014. A proposal for a miniseries titled “Black Canary: When Canaries Cry” was submitted for the 2022 DC Round Robin competition, but it didn’t take home the prize. The creative team behind this concept remains undisclosed.

King has been eager to share this story for quite some time now, and he’s thrilled that fans will soon get a glimpse of what he and Ryan have been working on regarding Dinah. I believe Ryan’s artistic style is just right for this series, and readers will truly feel the impact of each punch and kick from the initial issue all the way to the final one.

What Is Black Canary: Best of the Best About?

In the comic book “Black Canary: Best of the Best“, Black Canary encounters her most formidable adversary, Lady Shiva, in a contest to establish who is the ultimate martial artist within the DC Universe. To advance to the final bout, Black Canary will rely heavily on her fighting expertise and adaptability, while also seeking guidance from some of DC’s finest combatants, such as Batman, Wildcat, and even her own mother – the initial Black Canary!

Issue #1 of “Black Canary: Top-tier Talent” showcases the main artwork by series artist Ryan Sook, along with variant illustrations from David Nakayama, Chrissie Zullo, and Dan Hipp. Furthermore, it includes a wraparound cover by Otto Schmidt highlighting different iterations of Black Canary throughout the DC Universe.
