What Is Jackpot! About?

“Jackpot!”, set in the upcoming times, a new ‘Grand Lottery’ has been introduced in California – the twist: the winner must be murdered before sunset to lawfully acquire their astronomical jackpot. When Katie Kim (Awkwafina) shifts to Los Angeles, she unintentionally lands the winning ticket. To evade the throngs of jackpot seekers, she is forced into an alliance with inexperienced lottery bodyguard Noel Cassidy (John Cena), who will go to any length to escort her past sunset in return for a share of her winnings.

As a gamer, I find myself squaring off against my smooth-talking competitor, Louis Lewis, played by Simu Liu. Just like me, he’s got his eyes set on claiming Katie’s commission. The movie, penned by Rob Yescombe, is a thrilling tale of competition and determination.

Is Jackpot! a Shang-Chi Reunion?

Three years after their appearance together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” an impromptu reunion takes place between Liu and Awkwafina, aptly named “Jackpot!” This surprising encounter was not planned, as director Feig revealed during a 2024 ComicBook interview at San Diego Comic-Con.

“Absolutely, that film is fantastic! The humor in it is unplanned yet spot-on. When the script arrived, Nora was already connected to it. She’s a friend of mine and we’ve been brainstorming projects. However, we were uncertain about who would play the villain initially. Then, Simu’s team reached out expressing his interest in the role. I was taken aback, and it wasn’t until we cast him that I realized they had worked together before!”

Jackpot! is set to premiere globally on Prime Video on Thursday, August 15th.
