As someone who grew up watching Waterloo Road during its original run, I couldn’t be more thrilled with this news! The show was always a staple of my teenage years and it feels like coming home to see it back on our screens again. The way it tackled real-life issues, especially those affecting teens, resonated deeply with me and many others.
Enthusiasts of Waterloo Road can look forward to more episodes, as the BBC has revealed that the popular high school drama will continue airing up until at least 2026!
The show has been renewed for another two seasons on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and production is currently taking place in Greater Manchester.
Additionally, there are two more series, both of which have already been shot, set to air in September this year and early 2022. This means that viewers won’t find themselves short on fresh content.
Cameron Roach expressed his great excitement regarding the news, stating that the commitment underscores the series’ potential to captivate audiences with its engaging storyline while simultaneously fostering talent among the upcoming crew and actors, acting as a nurturing ground for a fresh wave of skilled professionals.
He stated: “The audience’s response to the performance has given us a tremendous boost, and our personal interactions with various collaborators have shown just how involved they are. This high level of engagement proves once again the enduring significance and impact of the show.”
Simultaneously, BBC’s Drama Director Lindsay Salt expressed her joy about the announcement and noted that it was immensely satisfying to witness Waterloo Road continually thrive and improve.
From the very start, I’ve been captivated by Waterloo Road, a series that graced BBC One from 2006 until 2015. Interestingly enough, it found a new lease of life in January 2023, returning to our screens after winning over viewers on BBC iPlayer during the lockdown period.
Over the course of its broadcast, this series has addressed several issues relevant to teenagers, their families, and educators, all while prioritizing the development of artistic skill sets in the Northern part of England.
For the upcoming season, Jason Manford is set to join the cast as the new character Steve Savage, taking on the role of headteacher, while Saira Choudhry, known for her work in “No Offence,” will portray maths teacher Nisha Chandra. Additionally, several fresh faces will be introduced to the cast, including Olly Rhodes from “The Last Kingdom,” Sonya Nisa from “Damsel,” Miya Ocego from “Wreck,” Danny Murphy from “The Parts You Lose,” Matthew Khan from “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” and Nathan Wood.
I’m thrilled to be part of the ensemble once again, joining the familiar faces such as Adam Thomas (Donte Charles) and Kym Marsh (Nicky Walters). Notably, we have James Baxter (Joe Casey), Jo Coffey (Wendy Whitwell), Shauna Shim (Valerie Chambers), Neil Fitzmaurice (Neil Guthrie), Rachel Leskovac (Coral Walker), and Katherine Pearce (Amy Spratt) in the teaching roles.
Additionally, we see familiar faces reprising their roles as students: Aabay Noor Ali playing Mollie “Mog” Richardson, Alicia Forde as Kelly-Jo Rafferty, Chiamaka (ChiChi) Ulebor portraying Shola Aku, Francesco Piacentini-Smith as Dean Weever, Hattie Dynevor in the role of Libby Guthrie, Liam Scholes as Noel McManus, Lucy Eleanor Begg as Caz Williams, Maisey Robinson acting as Portia Weever, Noah Valentine as Preston Walters, Summer Violet Bird taking on Tonya Walters, Thapelo Ray as Dwayne Jackson, Tillie Amartey in the part of Stacey “Stace” Neville, and Zak Sutcliffe portraying Schuey Weever.
