As a seasoned gamer who has navigated through countless virtual worlds and platformers, I find myself intrigued by the upcoming release of Astro Bot. The decision to expand this charming character from a smaller-scale game to a grander stage is a bold move that piques my curiosity.
As a gamer, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the complete console platformer experience with Astro Bot, and let me tell you, the mascot stole my heart with games like Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Astro’s Playroom. Now, our wait is almost over because the upcoming Astro Bot looks absolutely fantastic since its announcement earlier this year. In this article, I’ll be diving into all the essential details about Astro Bot that you should know before it hits the shelves!
SETUP
In this adventure, Astro Bot is embarking on its first full console game journey. However, what’s causing him to set off this time? The upcoming platformer reveals that Astro and his robot companions are in distress when their PS5 spaceship crashes and malfunctions, causing them to be thrown into various galaxies. Later, it’s up to Astro to traverse these galaxies using his faithful DualSense-inspired Dual Speeder to locate and rescue the other bots.
LEVELS AND GALAXIES
One significant aspect to consider about any platformer game is the number of levels it will provide. In the case of Astro Bot, developed by Team Asobi and published by Sony, it’s confirmed that the game will offer more than 80 stages for players to conquer, spread across six distinct galaxies. The variety in environments looks promising, as suggested by all the gameplay footage we’ve seen so far.
ENEMIES
In Astro Bot, it seems like a diverse array of characters will be the norm, and this seems to extend to its enemies too. The exact number of unique enemy types in the game is yet unknown, but we’ve spotted several familiar faces returning from earlier versions. Additionally, it’s been confirmed that the game will introduce over 70 completely new enemy types.
BOSSES
As I traverse the vastness of the cosmos in Astro’s thrilling journey, I can’t help but brace myself for encounters with a variety of formidable foes beyond the common enemies. I’m sure to tangle with some formidable bosses too, though their exact number remains unknown at this point. The roster includes both familiar faces like the colossal gorilla and the equally titanic octopus, as well as new adversaries that have left me awestruck, such as a monstrous snake looming ominously tall. From the glimpses I’ve caught so far, the boss battles promise to be nothing short of exhilarating!
OVER 300 BOTS TO RESCUE
In the course of navigating through more than 80 stages, Astro will actually be saving quite a number of bots. The developers, Team Asobi and Sony, have revealed that there will be over 300 bots for Astro to rescue, with most story levels containing around a dozen bots on average. Approximately half of these 300 bots are designated as VIP bots. Now, let’s talk about the VIP bots…
PLAYSTATION ICONS
As a die-hard fan, I was thrilled by the abundance of PlayStation references hidden in Astro’s Playroom. The upcoming Astro Bot is promising to amplify that charm, with an impressive 150 VIP bots! These special bots are inspired by characters from various PlayStation intellectual properties throughout the years, or botified versions of them at least. On top of that, you can also look forward to levels designed around iconic PlayStation games and franchises.
DIFFICULTY OPTIONS
3D platformers like Astro Bot’s Rescue Mission cater to a diverse range of players, making the game accessible for everyone with its adaptable challenge level. Essentially, various stages will be tagged with different difficulty ratings. The majority of levels within the main campaign should feel either easy or moderate for most players, but keep an eye out for additional platforming challenges and gauntlets labeled as hard.
DUALSENSE
Astro’s Playroom remains an outstanding demonstration of what the DualSense controller can do, and Team Asobi has hinted that they aim to continue this excellence with Astro Bot. This means we can anticipate more advanced use of the controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, along with a host of new features, including expanded accessibility options.
OVERHAULED ENGINE
Astro Bot doesn’t need to match the visual standards set by games like God of War or Horizon, but it still looks adorably lively and colorful. According to Team Asobi, this is largely due to a significant upgrade in their engine. Discussing this with YouTuber Julien Chièze, director Nicolas Doucet explained, “It may not be immediately noticeable, but you’d have to compare them side by side. We’ve completely overhauled our team’s engine, which allows Astro Bot to be much more visually appealing and offer more physics and features compared to Astro’s Playroom.”
NO VR SUPPORT PLANNED
Since Astro Bot Rescue Mission proved to be an outstanding VR game for PS4, it’s understandable that fans are eager for more virtual reality content featuring Astro. However, it seems that Astro Bot itself won’t be delivering more VR experiences, as it was not designed with VR in mind since its creation. In a conversation with Push Square, Nicolas Doucet explained that a VR version of Astro would require a unique design tailored for the medium, while a non-VR version would also necessitate a different design approach. The team’s focus was instead on expanding the world of Astro’s Playroom and bringing Astro to larger stages, rather than creating a VR game.
AN OPEN WORLD STRUCTURE WAS CONSIDERED
In the majority of platform games, whether 2D or 3D, there’s usually a level-based structure. This is also true for the game ‘Astro Bot’. However, if circumstances had been different, ‘Astro Bot’ might have been an open-world game instead. As revealed in an interview with EDGE magazine, Nicolas Doucet shared that they initially thought about an open-world approach for ‘Astro Bot’, but ultimately decided on a level-based structure because it provided them with the most control over the game’s diversity, as Doucet put it, “that was the one that gave us the most control over the game’s variety.”
FILE SIZE
On September 6th, when Astro Bot comes out, make sure you have a good amount of available storage space on your PlayStation 5 system. The game’s physical boxes reveal that Astro Bot requires approximately 66 GB of free space, which is significantly larger than the previous titles like Astro Bot Rescue Mission (around 8 GB) and Astro’s Playroom (11 GB). So, be sure to clear some room in advance!
LENGTH
Team Asobi characterizes Astro Bot as an exceptionally large game, making it the biggest in the Astro series so far. However, the question arises: how long will this game last? The developer estimates that Astro Bot will take around 12 to 15 hours to complete, which seems ideal for a 3D platformer. In contrast, Astro Bot Rescue Mission was approximately 8 to 10 hours long.
DLC
It appears that Astro Bot will offer a thrilling journey from the get-go, and Team Asobi plans to expand this experience post-launch. It has been confirmed that following the launch of Astro Bot, additional downloadable content (DLC) will become available. However, specific details about what this DLC will entail and how much of it we can expect are yet to be disclosed. Based on the way post-launch content was managed for Astro’s Playroom, we can anticipate that new characters to rescue might even include some VIP bots.
PRICE
In the PS5 generation, Sony chose a $70 pricing strategy for its major releases, but surprisingly, even though Astro Bot appears to be their most enticing release this year, they’re planning to sell it at a slightly lower price point. On September 6, the standard edition of Astro Bot will retail at $60.
