Deadpool Director Creating Secret Level, Animated Video Game Anthology Series at Prime Video

As a long-time gamer and a fan of both animated series and unique storytelling, I am absolutely thrilled about the prospect of Tim Miller and Blur Studio’s new animated series, Secret Level. The idea of an anthology series centered around various video games is not only intriguing but also reminiscent of my Saturday mornings spent in front of the TV watching Saturday Supercade back in the ’80s.

It’s rumored that Tim Miller, director of Deadpool, along with Blur Studio, are working on a new animated series tentatively titled Secret Level. As per reports from Deadline, this series is being developed for Amazon’s Prime Video and will function as an anthology, focusing on different video games. At the moment, the project has yet to be officially confirmed, so specific details are scarce. However, Deadline hints that Spelunky and New World (which is owned by Amazon) could potentially be featured in the series. There’s also a possibility that franchises belonging to PlayStation might make an appearance, but no particular titles have been specified yet.

As a gaming enthusiast myself, the concept of an anthology series centered around popular video games truly piques my curiosity! Reminiscent of the past, we had the ’80s classic Saturday Supercade, which showcased cartoons inspired by iconic games such as Donkey Kong, Frogger, and Q*Bert. However, video games have evolved significantly since then, and the plethora of timeless titles that could potentially grace our screens is immense, especially if this new series, Secret Level, becomes a hit. It’s worth noting that the audience for this show will likely be more mature than those who enjoyed Saturday Supercade.

Over the past few years, there’s been a resurgence in adapting video games into television shows and movies, with studios eagerly searching for various games to adapt. Notable franchises like Mario, Sonic, Halo, as well as lesser-known games such as Vampire Survivors and Among Us, have all received the adaptation treatment. Amazon Prime Video appears particularly interested in this trend; after the success of Fallout, they’ve announced adaptations for Tomb Raider and Yakuza/Like a Dragon. Given these developments, it’s not shocking to learn about another one being developed!

A formal declaration about the game titled Secret Level is imminent, possibly unveiled during Gamescom Opening Night Live. This exciting event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 20th at 11 a.m. Pacific Time. The renowned host, Geoff Keighley, has hinted that the show will disclose some fresh game announcements, and there’s a strong possibility that an announcement about a new animated series might be included too!
