Disneyland Renames Critter Country Ahead of Tiana's Bayou Adventure Opening

As a lifelong Disney enthusiast with memories spanning from my childhood to adulthood, I must say that this latest transformation of Critter Country into Bayou Country is truly enchanting! The magic of Disney has always been about growth and evolution, and seeing this classic land reimagined as a tribute to the beloved Princess Tiana is nothing short of extraordinary.

It’s time for Critter Country to depart and make way for Bayou Country at Disneyland. Following the renovation of its iconic ride, Splash Mountain, which was themed around the movie “Song of the South,” the area will be renamed when it reopens with the new Tiana’s Bayou Adventure ride on November 15. The name change was revealed during Disney’s D23 convention in Anaheim, where they showcased a fresh poster for the California adaptation of the classic log flume ride, reimagined as the 2009 animated film “The Princess and the Frog.”

Disney presents the revamped region as “Bayou Country, nestled on the outskirts of New Orleans Square with its leafy canopies, hypnotic tunes, and treasure trove of captivating wonders. Visitors will uncover a land brimming with affable forest creatures, ranging from a gator serenading with trumpet and a bear yearning for honey to a melodious troupe of bears, frogs, and other charming inhabitants.”

Initially, the land was inaugurated in 1956 as the Indian Village section of Frontierland within Disneyland. In 1972, a four-acre extension of the park’s northwest corner transformed the Indian Village into Bear Country – one of seven themed lands at Disneyland, with the now-closed Country Bears Jamboree serving as its centerpiece (the attraction later returned in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom). The region was subsequently renamed Critter Country in 1988 to align with the 1989 debut of Splash Mountain, a popular ride featuring Br’er Rabbit and other characters from the 1946 film Song of the South.

In addition to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Bayou Country also features attractions such as The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ride, Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes, and a revamped Hungry Bear restaurant, now known as the Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree. Both retail stores in this area will be rethemed based on The Princess and the Frog: one side of Pooh Corner shop will transform into Louis’ Critter Club, while The Briar Patch will reopen as Ray’s Berets.

2023 saw the debut of Tiana’s Palace, a restaurant themed around “The Princess and the Frog,” nestled in New Orleans Square at Disneyland Park. This eatery specializes in Creole and Cajun dishes. Meanwhile, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure was unveiled in June at Frontierland within Disney World’s Magic Kingdom park. This attraction will mark the start of the holiday season at the Disneyland Resort when its California counterpart opens in November.

As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be diving into two fresh Marvel-themed rides at Avengers Campus in Disneyland Resort. Plus, there’s a boat ride inspired by Pixar’s enchanting “Coco” and an immersive Pandora experience from the “Avatar” films over at Disney California Adventure Park. Not to forget, on Main Street of Disneyland itself, they’ve unveiled a brand-new show titled “Walt Disney – A Magical Life,” featuring the debut of an innovative audio-animatronic version of the man himself!
