Emmerdale confirms twisted move for Tom King as Belle abuse darkens with new victim

As a compassionate and informed viewer, I am deeply moved by the powerful storyline unfolding in Emmerdale regarding Tom King’s (James Chase) abusive behavior towards Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper). The way this narrative portrays the manipulative use of pets as a tool for control is both heart-wrenching and enlightening.

As a survivor of domestic abuse who has personally experienced the insidious nature of coercive control, I feel compelled to warn readers about the content of this article. It discusses the harrowing reality of domestic abuse, including coercive control, which can be emotionally distressing for those who have gone through similar experiences or are currently in abusive relationships. Please take care of your emotional well-being while reading.

The long-running abuse narrative on Emmerdale featuring Tom King, portrayed by James Chase, and Belle, played by Eden Taylor-Draper, will likely head down a disturbing path as Tom seems to be targeting another potential victim.

Tonight (August 16th), the episode unfolds with Tom’s manipulative tactics escalating into a chilling dimension as he plots to endanger Piper, the family pet. In an attempt to reconnect with Belle, Tom recklessly revs his vehicle near Piper.

According to Chase’s explanation, Tom understands that he has power over Belle by manipulating his dog in their abusive situation.

In a shocking move, Tom is resorting to this action as a means to reconnect with Belle. He understands that her response to Piper’s injury will allow him an opportunity to console her, thereby bringing them closer together once more. It’s a desperate measure, but in his current state, Tom is grasping at any possible solution.

To make this plot more authentic, Emmerdale is teaming up with Refuge and Dogs Trust. Based on a 2019 study by Dogs Trust, it was discovered that pets are frequently mistreated or even killed by abusers during domestic violence situations as a means of exerting control and manipulation.

Apart from the physical mistreatment dogs may endure, it’s alarming to know that a staggering 97% of experts within the field of domestic violence also reported instances where animals are exploited as tools for controlling individuals going through domestic abuse. This sobering fact was brought to light by Dogs Trust.

It’s important to note that no dog was harmed in the making of the scenes set to air and a behind-the-scenes of the process will be released on Monday 19th August on Emmerdale’s social channels.

Discussing the plot, Paula Boyden, the head vet at Dogs Trust, stated: “The latest story about Belle, Tom, and Piper is heart-wrenchingly sad, and unfortunately, it mirrors many situations we frequently encounter in our line of work.”

“Those we support share their stories of the many ways that perpetrators use pets to coerce, control, physically harm and threaten within abusive relationships. We’ve heard of perpetrators not letting survivors walk their dogs alone, stopping them from accessing vet care for their dogs or being able to spend money on dog food, and even repeatedly threatening to harm or kill their dogs. This is incredibly frightening, and leaves people feeling very isolated.

At times, abusers may purchase a pet for their partner, intending to manipulate and trap them. They exploit the deep emotional connections people have with their cherished pets in order to gain power over them.

She went on to say: “People frequently hesitate to leave abusive environments because they’re concerned about their pets’ safety if abandoned. Sadly, many shelters don’t accommodate pets. But that’s where our Freedom team comes in, providing a crucial lifeline by offering temporary foster homes for dogs until their owners can find a secure place to live.”

In much the same way, Laura Shaw, the producer of Emmerdale, stated: “Collaborating with these charities and listening to personal accounts from survivors of domestic abuse reveals a troubling truth – perpetrators often exploit family pets as tools for abuse.”

In the following sequences, audiences will witness Tom taking drastic steps to maintain his crumbling marriage with Belle, potentially putting Piper in grave danger. Might this extreme action serve as the catalyst that ultimately drives Belle to file a report against her husband, accusing him of abuse?

Emma Pickering, who leads the department focusing on technology-assisted abuse and financial independence at Refuge, commented: “Regrettably, we have found that perpetrators frequently employ various methods to inflict harm on their partners or former partners. Domestic abuse stems from power and control, and often, abusers extend their abuse towards pets as well. There’s a strong connection between animal cruelty and domestic violence.”

“Soaps should tackle frankly the harsh truth of domestic abuse and its consequences. If you see similar behaviors in a character named Tom, it might suggest that you’re dealing with domestic abuse yourself. Know that you’re not alone in this situation.”
