Laika Teams With Converse for Coraline-Themed Chuck Taylors and More

As a gamer with a soft spot for animated films and a deep appreciation for the intricate world of stop-motion animation, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement upon hearing about the Converse x Coraline collaboration. Growing up, Coraline was one of those films that left an indelible mark on my childhood imagination, with its captivating storyline, stunning visuals, and eerie yet enchanting atmosphere.

Collaborating together, Converse and Laika are introducing a line of shoes and clothing inspired by the studio’s critically acclaimed film, “Coraline.” The collection highlights a pair of Coraline-themed Chuck Taylor All-Stars, available for preorder now. Originally a book by Neil Gaiman and beautifully illustrated by Chris Riddell, “Coraline” premiered in theaters in 2009. This captivating stop-motion animated film has left an indelible mark on the 2000s animation era, with director Henry Selick hinting at a potential future collaboration with Gaiman (though it’s not yet confirmed whether this will come to fruition).

As a gamer speaking up, I’m excited to share that I’m pitching my 35-page treatment along with loads of concept art to various studios right now. Without spilling the beans about any specific deals, let me just say that ShadowMachine (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio) and Laika, where Coraline was born, are two studios that stand out as potential powerhouses for my project.

To mark the 15-year milestone of the movie, the Converse x Coraline line is a fusion of movie scenes, characters, and motifs, offering both adults and children a variety of footwear, as well as clothing items.

David Burke, Laika’s Chief Marketing & Operations Officer, expresses his pride in once again teaming up with Converse. This collaboration is particularly exciting as it coincides with the 15th anniversary and global cinema re-release of Coraline. “The Converse team’s innovative ideas and collaborative nature make them an ideal partner for Laika,” says Burke. “We believe this collection will delight fans of both Coraline and Converse.”

From today, audience members in the U.S. who are attending the re-release of Coraline, can reserve the Laika unique “Star Sweater” Chuck 70 beforehand by scanning the on-screen QR code that will be displayed during the pre-show presentations.

The full Converse x Coraline collection will be available Holiday 2024.

In the tale of “Coraline,” a young girl named Coraline (Dakota Fanning), as she explores her fresh residence, stumbles upon a hidden door leading to an alternate reality that resembles her world but offers improved aspects in numerous ways. At first, she’s thrilled by this discovery; however, her joy is short-lived when the Other Mother (Teri Hatcher) and her mirror family attempt to trap her in their realm permanently. Determined to return to her genuine family and life, Coraline employs all her cunning and courage to escape.
