As a fan who has been following Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi for years, I must say that their love story is one of the most inspiring and heartwarming ones out there. Their social media posts may not be frequent, but when they do share a glimpse into their lives, it’s pure magic.
Do you remember what was Big in ’04?
Paris Hilton expresses “That’s cool.” regarding the pairing of Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson as Newlyweds, while Flavor Flav and Brigitte Nielsen were known as The Surreal Life’s most passionate duo.
At VH1’s Big in ’04 Awards on Dec. 1, something far more significant was unfolding behind the scenes.
It was on that particular night that Ellen DeGeneres crossed paths with Portia de Rossi at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium. This encounter marked a turning point in de Rossi’s life forevermore.
Absolutely, their lives were irrevocably changed due to their enduring bond, but it was Portia who transformed, much like a butterfly breaking free from its chrysalis, fully accepting and expressing her true self.
In an interview with The Advocate in the summer of 2005, the Arrested Development star explained that while some people are aware he is gay, it’s not a significant part of his public persona. He has managed to live a fulfilling life and pursue his career, incidentally being gay but not making it a political statement. He admitted that he had a challenging journey grappling with his sexuality.
Since her divorce from Mel Metcalf in 1999, Portia hasn’t shied away from relationships with women. In fact, following that split, she found it difficult not to cherish the genuine and caring bond they shared. (This is a paraphrase of the original sentence, maintaining the essence of the information while providing a more conversational tone.)
And she was in a relationship with writer-filmmaker Francesca Gregorini when she met Ellen.
However, at the age of 51, Portia would later acknowledge that, despite stepping into the limelight alongside one of the world’s most prominent openly gay women, she hadn’t fully embraced an open and authentic life.
The former Ally McBeal star chose to speak through the photos she took with Francesca during their two-year relationship, which included a period where they lived together in Vancouver. However, when questioned about her sexuality by interviewers, she would steer the conversation away from that topic. She was silent on this aspect of her personal life, at least publicly, until she started dating Ellen.
In 2005, she confided in The Advocate that, a few days prior, she had disclosed her identity to the last person on her list – her 98.5-year-old grandmother from Australia, who initially misunderstood and thought she said “Alan” instead of “Ellen.”
Portia’s grandmother reached the age of 103 before she peacefully passed away at home. A cherished photograph from her granddaughter’s wedding to Alan in 2008 adorned her bedside.
On April 14, 1997, Ellen publicly revealed her identity on the cover of TIME magazine. This made her well-aware of the significant discussions that could arise from just living authentically.
Portia praised her by saying, “In ’97, she was incredibly bold and outspoken, and now she’s making a more subtle impact.” She continued, expressing admiration, “She’s transforming the world in a profound way, and it’s thrilling to be involved.” She further commented, “It can be challenging to maintain a relationship when it’s under public scrutiny. It’s also difficult living a life in the spotlight, especially when that life is shared with someone who is incredibly well-known, adored, and respected. Yet, it’s equally exhilarating.”
After a series of years marked by headlines, Ellen initially encountered Portia in the year 2000. As Portia expressed to The Advocate, “I continuously thought about her because I hadn’t experienced such intense energy with anyone else in my life. So, there’s that.”
Later on, they crossed paths once more during a photoshoot, and Ellen left me speechless, she reminisced. Consequently, their reunion at the Big Awards in 2004 sealed the deal.
By the end of 2005, they were sharing a two-bedroom home in L.A. and parenting three rescue cats.
They also bought a 120-acre ranch, Portia being an avid horseback rider.
Ellen expressed to People magazine in November 2005 that it felt as if she was with her partner for the remainder of her life for the first time, deeply rooted in every fiber of her being. Prior to this, she had been in a relationship with photographer Alexandra Hedison for four years, before she and Portia de Rossi became an item.
“Originally, we were meant to be in each other’s company,” the freshly minted talk show host explained. “Making that choice was difficult. I found myself falling ill due to my reluctance to speak up. Eventually, I confided in Alex, who then informed Francesca. It was an excruciating process to leave everything behind.”
In 2014, Francesca confessed to The Advocate that her separation from Portia was a very difficult experience. She has not spoken much about it before, but she wants to be considerate of everyone involved. To clarify, Francesca and Portia are on friendly terms now, and she is also friends with Ellen.
She remarked, “Things unfolded exactly as planned, yet at the moment, it was incredibly distressing due to the painful nature of heartbreak. Breakups are never easy, but when they’re played out publicly, it adds to the misery. However, it taught me resilience. I was knocked down for a while, but it instilled in me the determination to rise again and make the most of myself and my life.”
It seems our paths were destined to cross at that particular moment, but afterward, it wasn’t meant to be. I believe she’s found an excellent match in her current partner; they seem perfectly suited to each other.
For 19 years, my beloved talk show served as one of my children, while Ellen and Portia, fellow animal enthusiasts, nurtured numerous rescued pets like devoted mothers.
In 2005, she shared with People that it was the most challenging job she’s ever encountered, but also the most rewarding. She likened it to being a mother due to this unique mix of difficulty and fulfillment. This conversation took place when The Ellen DeGeneres Show was still in its third season.
Currently, she has won the Daytime Emmy award an impressive 33 times. This includes five awards for Outstanding Talk Show Host which she received before she stepped down in 2010. Additionally, she is a prime-time Emmy winner due to her writing contributions on her sitcom Ellen during the 1990s.
There were many rumors that she might resign or be replaced (in the context of television) before the 2020-2021 season due to an investigation into claims of a hostile work environment at Ellen. In the end, three producers were let go, but the show’s host promised her team and viewers to improve and continued working, eventually announcing her departure for 2022.
Ellen stated during the Season 18 premiere in September 2020: “I’ve discovered regrettable events took place here, which should never have occurred. I deeply apologize to those impacted… We’ve implemented required adjustments, and now we begin a fresh chapter.”
In both 2020 and 2021, it was her dedicated fanbase who helped secure her talk show’s win at the TopMob People’s Choice Awards.
“It holds a deeper significance for me at this time, she shared with the audience in December 2021. “As our series comes to an end, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who voted and worked alongside me over the past 19 years. We’ve formed a family here, and I cherish each one of you. I am deeply grateful for your support throughout these 19 years of our shared journey. This show has been an extraordinary part of my life, and I have relished every moment of it.”
And Portia was by her side through 18 years of it.
Ellen confided to People magazine in February 2021 that the upheaval surrounding her show had left her heartbroken. She added, “I wouldn’t have been able to endure everything I experienced if it weren’t for her. It was a difficult period in my life, and she served as a foundation. She kept me moving forward and helped me find some perspective amidst the chaos.”
In their own words, Portia shared, “Our bond has strengthened over time, and we prioritize our relationship above all else. This solidifies us even more. It’s hard to envision spending time with anyone else but her.”
Ellen DeGeneres has moved on from her daytime talk show chapter, and it seems her career may be winding down too. However, she continues to enjoy the companionship of her partner Portia, who they reaffirmed their commitment to each other by renewing their vows in 2023.
In May of 2022, Ellen told Portia that the end of the show was a significant event for both of them. This was when Portia visited the show as a guest for the final time, and Ellen pointed out that they started dating during season two, because you’ve been there to witness my journey with this show throughout everything.
And in turn, the show’s audience has been privy to many of their milestones as a couple.
Back in May of 2008, following the historic California Supreme Court decision that overturned a law limiting marriage to heterosexual couples, I was thrilled to share on air that my partner and I were preparing to get married. (It wasn’t until 2015 that same-sex marriage was made legal nationwide.)
On August 16, 2008, they exchanged wedding vows at their Beverly Hills mansion, both adorning designs by Zac Posen for the special occasion.
Ellen has been on par with Oprah Winfrey for quite some time now, known as prominent figures in pop culture without their last names. Moreover, she’s established herself as a significant player in Southern California real estate, having bought and sold over 20 properties since 2003. Notable transactions include the Los Angeles mansion she and Portia sold to Napster co-founder Sean Parker for $55 million in 2014, just six months after purchasing it for $40 million; a Bali-inspired home they bought in Montecito for $27 million in 2019 and later resold for $33.3 million the following year; and a beach house that they owned for two years before selling to cosmetics mogul Jamie Kern Lima for $23 million in 2019.
In May 2021, according to Architectural Digest, they bought back Rancho San Leandro, a historic Montecito property they had sold a few years earlier to Tinder founder Sean Rad for $11 million, at a price of $14.3 million. A month later, they expanded their collection by acquiring a modest two-bedroom, midcentury-modern bungalow close to Butterfly beach, which cost them $2.9 million.
Regarding the 9,200-square-foot Beverly Hills home where they got married, Ellen DeGeneres sold it to her friend Ryan Seacrest for approximately $40 million in 2012. It seems that she did so just before Jennifer Aniston had a chance to buy it.
“On TopMob Live From the Red Carpet during the 2020 Golden Globes, Jen playfully questioned Ryan about his home, hinting that she suspected Ellen might be nearby and that Ellen was fully cognizant of Jen’s sentiments towards the property.”
Experiencing homeownership isn’t always a smooth ride, as Ellen and Portia discovered when they were part of the numerous residents forced to leave their homes due to the destructive Thomas Fire that swept through Montecito in 2017.
After the fires, there were mudslides that tragically claimed at least 20 lives in the Montecito region. The couple had only just returned to their house 10 days earlier before they were forced to evacuate once more.
They thanked the brave firefighters and first responders who put their lives on the line during both emergencies for their selfless actions.
In an interview with Extra in December 2017, when Ellen discussed their unexpected holiday plan alterations (initially planning to celebrate in Montecito), she placed everything into a clearer context.
She mentioned, “We’ll keep a low profile and appreciate having our pets around, as Portia’s horses have been evacuated and we’re eager to find them a new place soon. Incidents like these serve as a reminder of how delicate life can be and the importance of never taking anything for granted. I’ll definitely be grateful this Christmas.”
Regardless of the challenges they’ve faced together, just like any well-known pair, their love story doesn’t make them immune to the hassles of being under the spotlight. They’ve generated as many speculations about their break-up as anyone else, often sparked by seemingly trivial incidents such as a missed event or a ringless finger. In fact, Ellen DeGeneres even poked fun at these rumors on her show in 2013.
She said she had been flipping through a tabloid that put on its cover that her marriage was crumbling, only to find that article ripped out. “I will never know what’s tearing my marriage apart,” she quipped.
However, persisting rumors about their contentious separation refused to fade, Ellen felt the need to express herself more decisively in March 2014.
She honestly confessed to People magazine, “My feelings for Portia grow stronger every day, and I must admit, it sounds a bit cheesy. But it’s true.” She consistently amazes me. It’s like finding that special someone who truly understands you, cares for you, and wishes the best for you. We consider ourselves fortunate because we recognize how uncommon such a connection is.
In 2016, there were yet another round of gossip circulating, causing Ellen to share with People magazine, “It’s hard for me to envision a life unmarried. My partner is my best friend, the individual I desire to spend the most time with above everyone else on this planet.”
In her own words, she mentioned that their bond with Portia had never wavered, and they were always ready to invest the effort that every dedicated partnership calls for.
Ellen stated, “Our focus is on each other,” she explained. “If we had children, they’d undoubtedly be our top priority, but as it stands, we are. And that’s significant.”
To mark their ninth wedding anniversary, she posted on Instagram, “Being her wife is my greatest role.” (This maintains the original sentiment and uses a more conversational tone.)
Back in 2018, they marked their 10th anniversary by treating fans to unseen photos and videos of their wedding day for the first time.
10 years ago, Wayne Dyer conducted our wedding ceremony. His words had a profound impact on us back then, and they continue to hold the same significance for us today, Ellen wrote in one of her posts.
10 years ago today, Ellen and I exchanged wedding vows. To commemorate this occasion, I wanted to share the heartfelt words of Wayne Dyer, reminding us all of our progress – we reside in a nation that embraces #marriageequality #waynedyer.
Now with 16 years of marriage in the books, they’re still having the best time together.
In her recent interview on the Ellen show, Portia expressed to her spouse that for her upcoming phase, ” frankly, all I ask is that you engage in an activity that brings immense joy to you. However, I want to emphasize that you should remain a teacher, as it’s what you’ve always been to everyone…I truly believe, now more than ever, we need love, positivity, and laughter – so I hope you keep doing something like that. Maybe comedy, for instance.”
Since 2018, Ellen DeGeneres demonstrated that her comedic skills are still sharp in her first stand-up special in fifteen years. Joking around has always been a significant aspect of her persona, no matter where she appears.
Over the last 17 years, y’all have seen right through me like peeling back layers of an old book, and I can’t thank you enough for it. It’s been a wild ride, but my rock, Mark, has been by my side every step of the way, making this journey bearable, even when I know it wasn’t always easy on him or our kids, Rupert and Fiona (though they seem to have grown up faster than time itself, now off in college!). Still, I love you two dearly.
Everyone in the room found it amusing, and Portia, who’s accustomed to being applauded onstage far too many times to remember, joined in with a warm, genuine laugh.
She wrote on Instagram for Ellen’s 66th birthday on January 26th: “My dearest wife! You never cease to amaze and inspire me. Here’s wishing the strongest, kindest, most intelligent person I know a very happy birthday. I feel so fortunate to be walking this extraordinary life with you by my side. I adore you.”
In the talk show “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction,” hosted by David Letterman in 2019, Ellen referred to her spouse as “wonderful” (or “excellent”).
“She’s incredibly humorous; she always manages to make me chuckle, which I value greatly.”
As for the split rumors, Ellen chose to view them in a positive light.
She shared with Dave, “The divorce rumors arose, and at that point, it was clear to me that people’s perceptions had shifted.” More honestly, she confided, “I’m not joking. It may sound absurd, but once the whispers of divorce began, I felt, ‘Now we’re finally recognized.’ We experience the same challenges as every famous couple.”
I contemplated, ‘Amazing! Whether I’m pregnant or not, divorced or not, it doesn’t matter. This shows a level of acceptance.’
Forgo the gossip, seize the chance to witness additional heartwarming chapters in Ellen and Portia’s lasting love tale.
It’s never too late (or too early) to snap a selfie.
At the 2020 Golden Globe Awards, where Ellen received the Carol Burnett Award, she took a moment to express her gratitude towards her husband, Mark, acknowledging his steadfast support.
She playfully remarked, “Thanks for sticking by me during this wild ride,” which made Portia laugh heartily among the crowd. I realize it wasn’t a breeze for you or the children either. So, Rupert and Fiona, it’s time to get some rest now.
