Alien Romulus brings back major original star in shock twist

As a movie connoisseur with decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that the return of Ian Holm in Alien: Romulus has left me both intrigued and nostalgic. It’s been a while since we’ve seen the late, great actor grace our screens, and his presence here is nothing short of magical.

**WARNING: Contains spoilers for Alien: Romulus**

Through the passage of time, several esteemed actors from Hollywood have faced off against xenomorphs in the Alien movie series.

Sigourney Weaver, renowned for her portrayal of Ellen Ripley in the initial four films, is undeniably synonymous with the franchise. However, it’s worth noting that numerous other gifted actors have graced the series with their significant performances.

In Ridley Scott’s initial movie, only John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto appeared. Since then, notable actors like Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, Charles Dance, Winona Ryder, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, and Michael Fassbender have also made significant contributions to the franchise. Impressive lineup indeed!

In my humble opinion as a cinephile, the latest installment in the Alien franchise, titled “Alien: Romulus,” offers an intriguing blend of fresh talent and nostalgic nods to its roots. The young ensemble, spearheaded by Cailee Spaeny’s captivating portrayal of Priscilla, is a breath of fresh air. However, in a surprising turn of events reminiscent of the original film, an unexpected cameo has been introduced that promises to stir intense discussions and arguments among viewers. This unexpected move, questioning the moral implications of such a decision, will undoubtedly leave audiences divided and spark heated debates about the ethical dilemmas presented on screen.

In the movie, they find a new artificial human character resembling the late Ian Holm (who passed away in 2020) while exploring an abandoned space station, serving as the basis for most of the plot.

As a seasoned moviegoer with decades of watching films under my belt, I can confidently say that this new character is not the same one played by Holm in the original 1979 film. Instead, they have created a fresh take on a similar model, christened Rook, who brings a unique flavor to the storyline. It’s always exciting to see how directors and writers breathe new life into classic characters while keeping the essence of the original intact. I can’t wait to explore this intriguing version of Rook in the upcoming movie!

In addition, it’s not just a brief appearance: Rook is a substantial character with depth. It’s revealed that he once held the position of science officer on Romulus, where he was conducting significant research that turns out to be pivotal to the storyline unfolding in the movie.

How did Alien: Romulus bring back Ian Holm?

Currently, there’s no specific detail known on how the character Rook was developed, but it’s evident that artificial intelligence played a role in its creation, utilizing prior recordings of Holm as a basis.

During the end of the movie, it’s noted that the actor playing the character, Holm himself, offered “face and voice references.” Meanwhile, another performer, Daniel Betts (known for roles in Gentleman Jack and After the Flood), is acknowledged for his “facial and vocal performance.”

It’s likely that permission was obtained from Holm’s family to use the deceased actor’s image, but there’s no doubt it will stir up some controversy, as has been the case with other films where actors have been resurrected posthumously, such as Peter Cushing in Rogue One and Harold Ramis in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

As we gain further insights into the process, likely through discussions with director Fede Álvarez, we’ll make sure to keep this page updated appropriately.

In my acting journey, I’ve had the privilege of playing various characters across diverse roles, yet it seems my portrayal of Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy is what resonates most with audiences. However, there are other notable performances that I hold dear, such as in Brazil, The Madness of King George, The Sweet Hereafter, and The Aviator.

Alien: Romulus will be released in cinemas on Friday 16th August.
