As a lifelong comics fan with a particular fondness for the gritty noir tales spun by legends like Dennis O’Neil and Greg Rucka, I can hardly contain my excitement for “The Question: All Along the Watchtower”! The prospect of following Renee Montoya as she unravels a murder mystery on the Justice League Watchtower is not only a thrilling opportunity to delve deeper into one of my favorite DC characters but also a testament to the enduring appeal of the classic noir genre in the superhero world.
In the next chapter, Renee Montoya/The Question, previously featured in a three-part story within The Brave and the Bold, will embark on further adventures under the pen of writer Alex Segura and artist Cian Tormey. Known for his work on mystery novels, Segura is currently writing Spider-Society for Marvel, as well as a new Dick Tracy series by Mad Cave Studios. The upcoming series, named The Question: All Along the Watchtower, finds Montoya investigating a string of crimes, including murder. It remains uncertain if a member of the Justice League will be a victim or if there’s another reason for the investigation to take place outside of the Watchtower.
On his Substack platform, Segura hinted at numerous appearances and hidden references in the book for his fans. As for Batman, it could be that he enlisted Renee for a specific purpose – or perhaps he’s a suspect himself and doesn’t feel comfortable probing further. In any case, Segura described the tale as a heartfelt tribute to Renee, the creations of Dennis O’Neil and Greg Rucka, and the DC universe at large.
“Without giving too much away, the upcoming comic ‘All Along the Watchtower’ delves into the tale of Renee/The Question, who is called upon by Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman to unravel a string of lethal incidents. And if you’re wondering, there could very well be some murders involved, Segura hinted. This story promises to be a gripping noir murder mystery on the grand DC stage, with Renee being my all-time favorite DC Comics character. I can barely contain my excitement about this project! The Denny O’Neil/Denys Cowan run on The Question and Greg Rucka’s work on Renee in Gotham Central, 52, and with Cully Hamner as the Question have been monumental influences on me as a writer. I take this task very seriously, and I’m striving to capture that unique balance that makes Renee stories so compelling: combining elements of classic noir crime fiction with the awe-inspiring aspects of superheroics.”
In 1967, a Bob Dylan song called “All Along the Watchtower” was released on his album “John Wesley Harding.” This song made its debut around the same time as a character named The Question, created by Steve Ditko for Blue Beetle #1. Both The Question and other characters from Charlton Comics were later sold to DC, forming the foundation for the comic series Watchmen. The tenth issue of Watchmen, titled “Two Riders Were Approaching,” takes its title from lyrics in Dylan’s song.
