Big O Celebrates 25th Anniversary With New Art

As a long-time anime enthusiast who fondly remembers the days of Toonami dominating Saturday nights, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement as The Big O celebrates its 25th anniversary. I was there when Roger Smith first rolled onto our screens in his mighty mech, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Instead of Bruce Wayne donning his bat suit, imagine him swapping it for a colossal mech. To some extent, “The Big O” attempts to address this scenario through the narrative of Roger Smith and the city of Paradigm, which significantly boosted Cartoon Network’s Toonami. Although a sequel series has revived the storyline, answering some key questions from the anime version, it’s been quite a while since a new episode graced our screens. Despite Roger Smith’s supposed retirement, the franchise is marking its 25th anniversary with fresh artwork from co-creator Keiichi Sato. Although a new season may not be in production, the memory of Paradigm City remains vivid among fans.

Originally introduced as a manga by creator Hitoshi Ariga in 1999, “The Big O” made an impact when it simultaneously released an anime adaptation both in Japan and the United States. On Western television screens, the series gained popularity on Toonami and played a significant role in establishing the platform as a go-to destination for new anime releases. Approximately three and a half years after its premiere, the first installment was followed by a sequel that finally wrapped up Paradigm City’s tale.

The Big O Turns 25

At the moment, catching up on “The Big O” might require a bit of effort. Regrettably, it’s not streaming freely right now, but fans can keep their fingers crossed that the upcoming twenty-fifth anniversary might revive interest in the series, possibly leading to its return in some shape or form.

If you’re eager to delve deeper into the captivating world of a popular anime, let me share an account of the narrative that revolves around Roger Smith and his multifunctional mech. In the city known as Paradigm, there exists no recollection of the past due to an incident 40 years ago that erased everyone’s memories. Regrettably, before this event, inhabitants were engrossed in creating colossal robots (Megadueses) and monsters. As people born after the memory loss are gradually regaining memories from the past, they are using them to construct fresh perils. Roger Smith maintains the safety of Paradigm City with the assistance of The Big O (an ever-loyal giant robot), his butler Norman, and the android Dorothy. As challenges escalate and more fragments of the past resurface, the enigma surrounding Roger’s history and the destiny of Paradigm City become increasingly uncertain…

Hey there fellow gamers! Ever wondered if our favorite cybernetic hero, Big O, might make a return someday? Keep your eyes peeled with me as we team up with Team Anime over at ComicBook.
