As a long-time fan of the Alien franchise, I can confidently say that my excitement for Alien: Romulus has reached new heights! With its impressive preview numbers and exceptional Rotten Tomatoes score, it’s clear that this movie is set to rejuvenate the series in ways we haven’t seen since the glory days of Aliens.
The film titled “Romulus,” considered one of the best Alien movies in years, brought in $6.5 million during its Thursday night previews. This suggests a potential opening weekend gross of more than $50 million. Previously, it was anticipated to earn around $40 million or higher on its opening weekend, but the strong preview figures place it in the same league as films like “A Quiet Place: Day One” ($6.7 million Thursday, $52 million opening weekend) and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ($6.6 million Thursday, $58 million opening weekend). Theaters overall had a successful Thursday night, with “It Ends With Us” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” both earning over $4 million each, despite not being in their initial release frames.
The film shares the same cosmic setting as Ridley Scott’s “Alien” films but aims to blaze its own trail, appealing anew to viewers who might have grown disenchanted (a playful reference) following some uninspiring additions to the series. This movie revolves around a team of astronauts stranded with a terrifying creature while they explore a deserted space station, essentially recreating a horror-filled science fiction take on classic slasher movies where characters are cornered by the killer in isolated locations like houses or campsites.
As a diehard Alien fan, I was thrilled to see the initial wave of reviews for Alien: Romulus roll in last Wednesday afternoon. The film has already managed to surpass the Rotten Tomatoes score of any other title in the franchise since James Cameron’s iconic Aliens, which graced our screens way back in 1986!
The classic movie Alien, which kick-started an extended franchise, has given birth to a vast multimedia realm encompassing comic books, video games, novels, and an abundance of merchandise and collectibles that could fill your arms if you try to count them all.
Romulus: Alien echoes the path taken by 20th Century Studios’ Prey, which aimed to breathe new life into the Predator series by infusing a fresh directorial perspective, following years of underwhelming sequels.
The movie “Alien: Romulus” features Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. It is directed by Fede Alvarez, who also wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues, based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett, and is known for his work on films such as “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe.”
Alien: Romulus is in theaters now.
