Apartment 7A Poster Channels the Spirit of Rosemary's Baby

As a longtime fan of Rosemary’s Baby, I must say that the upcoming prequel, Apartment 7A, has piqued my interest significantly. The poster, with its eerie resemblance to the original while subtly hinting at new twists and turns, has me intrigued. The star-studded cast, led by Julia Garner, Dianne Wiest, and directed by Natalie Erika James, who delivered us the chilling Relic, promises a gripping tale that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

One of the highly awaited horror releases this fall is “Apartment 7A” on Paramount+. Though it’s a prequel to “Rosemary’s Baby”, its title may not initially hint at its connection to the classic Satanic tale. However, the first poster for the film deliberately echoes the timeless look of the 1968 movie featuring Mia Farrow, but also offers a contemporary twist on that imagery to signal how this new film will challenge viewers’ expectations. You can view the poster for “Apartment 7A” below, courtesy of Bloody Disgusting, before it premieres on Paramount+ on September 27th.

In 1965 New York City, prior to the chilling events of the renowned horror classic “Rosemary’s Baby,” the movie “Apartment 7A” unfolds. The tale begins when an aspiring dancer, facing hardships, is lured by mysterious forces after a wealthy, enigmatic older couple offers her a chance at stardom, following a tragic dance-related injury.

The cast of the movie “Apartment 7A” includes Julia Garner (known for Ozark), Dianne Wiest (from Mayor of Kingstown), Jim Sturgess (famous for Across the Universe), Kevin McNally (well-known from Pirates of the Caribbean films), Marli Siu (recognized in Everything I Know About Love), Andrew Buchan (renowned in All the Money in the World), Rosy McEwen (acclaimed in Blue Jean), and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (upcoming in Wonka). Notably, Natalie Erika James, who has previously directed Relic, is the director of this film.

In an earlier conversation with Vanity Fair, director Natalie Erika James admitted that when initially offered the project, she was quite skeptical. However, she found joy in delving into the world and the narrative of Ira Levin’s novel, as well as manipulating the characters. Her decision to accept the task stemmed from a belief that there was an unexplored emotional path to traverse and a way to twist the genre subtly.

She commented, “There’s a significant distinction between Rosemary and Terry (Garner’s character). Rosemary initially appears as an innocent victim of her husband’s decisions, but she subsequently embarks on a quest to uncover the sinister plot surrounding her. The horror lies in this revelation… On the other hand, I believe Terry represents both Rosemary and Guy. She is not just a passive recipient, but also an active participant in the Faustian pact. There’s still a broader conspiracy at play, and she is manipulated into feeling responsible for her own abuse, which makes the situation even more terrifying.”

Apartment 7A comes to Paramount+ on September 27th.
