New Black Lightning Series Announced by DC

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through countless virtual battles and saved countless digital worlds, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement when it comes to real-life superheroes like Black Lightning. The news of his return with a family affair has me all charged up!

Jefferson “Black Lightning” Pierce is set to shine once more! It’s been officially confirmed that DC Comics will launch a new Black Lightning miniseries, penned by Brandon Thomas and illustrated by Fico Ossio, as part of their November 2024 lineup. The five-issue series will stem from the aftermath of the recent “Absolute Power” crossover event and Jefferson’s involvement in Mark Waid and Dan Mora’s “Justice League Unlimited.” This upcoming storyline is part of DC’s All In initiative, and will feature Jefferson’s superhero daughters, Anissa Pierce (Thunder) and Jennifer Pierce (Lightning), as co-stars. The first issue of Black Lightning hits shelves on November 13th, with artwork by Ossio adorning the main cover, while Sanford Greene, Taurin Clarke, and Juliet Nneka provide variant covers.

Following the events of “Absolute Power”, Jefferson Pierce’s life and that of his family have undergone significant transformations. According to Thomas, as reported by The Beat, Jefferson has stepped into a prominent position within the revitalized Justice League Unlimited. Additionally, he has established a crisis management team that deals with and neutralizes rising Metahumans before their powers pose a threat to themselves and others.

What Is Black Lightning #1 About?

In the television series Black Lightning, Black Lightning returns to action, and this time it’s a family-oriented mission! Jefferson Pierce spearheads the Justice League’s latest metahuman outreach program, assisting those with powers to prevent them from inflicting harm on themselves or others. However, things take an unexpected turn when his daughter, Anissa Pierce, seeks help from him. As Thunder develops powerful new abilities and the emerging Masters of Disaster pose a threat to the harmony between humans and metahumans, Black Lightning stands at the forefront of a potentially explosive cultural conflict simmering in the outskirts of Metropolis!

“Ossio shared that he has been busy revamping the costumes for Black Lightning, Thunder, and Lightning. It was a fun experience for him, and he hopes the audience appreciates our interpretation of these characters. We’ve incorporated elements of Black Lightning’s classic design while adding more character and distinctiveness to Thunder and Lightning. You’ll notice traces of Jefferson’s original costume, but updated with a sharper, armor-like aesthetic. After all, this is BLACK LIGHTNING!”

Thomas remarked, “This tale holds deep personal significance for Jefferson since he’s collaborating on it alongside his youngest daughter Jennifer, blending his identities as both a Super Hero and an educator. His eldest daughter Anissa is pivotal in the series, her powers altered post-ABSOLUTE POWER, leaving her in a desperate situation that calls for her father’s aid. The Pierce family grapples with maintaining their unity amidst the turmoil, while a formidable adversary strengthens their position, exploiting public opinion that claims ‘Waller was correct‘ to fear these power-hungry deities.”
