18-year-old Roper Ace Patton Ashford of Lott, Texas, tragically passed away on August 12 due to injuries he received when a horse pulled him along, as confirmed by local firefighters.
Emergency services arrived at the location approximately 8 a.m., as per local news source KWTX, since that’s where Ashford was tending to an ailing calf. The incident occurred when the horse became frightened while he was handling it.
According to the Lott Volunteer Fire Department, it appears that the man’s leg became entangled somehow, causing the horse to pull him over a considerable distance across an open field.
After graduating from high school, the individual was helicoptered to a nearby medical facility. At that moment, they were still breathing. However, the fire department reported that his condition was quite serious.
It was additionally verified that Ashford passed away, as stated by his family in his obituary, who mentioned that he departed to be with his Higher Power and Savior during the early hours of Monday, August 12, 2024.
As reported by his family, Troy Wayne Ashford and Jamie Dawn Ashford, Ace had a passion for rodeo and was recognized as the “Header” in the sport of Team Roping.
1. For countless hours, Ashford honed his lassoing abilities, and he was an active participant in the Texas High School Rodeo Association. Moreover, he had been granted a scholarship and was getting ready to join the Hill College Rodeo Team come the fall.
His family expressed that the time spent with him would always be deeply treasured by those whose lives he influenced, as they were moved by his compassion and affection.
In a heartfelt Facebook post on August 13th, the Team Roping Journal honored the late rodeo star by saying that Ashford was a soul beyond his years, whose time among us was tragically cut short when he passed away the previous day.
They added, “Our hearts ache for our team roping family and everyone who love this young cowboy.”
Veteran roper Cody Snow praised his fellow competitor, saying, “He was as genuine as they come. He was truly golden.”
According to his death notice, he is mourned by his parents, sister Macy Rule (along with her fiancé Ryan), brother Ross and his wife Taylor Boatright, and his girlfriend Sydney.
