Xbox Series X Game Cancelled After Developer Reveals "Nightmare" Experience

As a longtime gamer and supporter of indie games, this news about the cancellation of HAAK for Xbox Series X/S leaves me genuinely disheartened. The game seems to have garnered positive reviews from players on Steam, making it all the more disappointing that Xbox fans may miss out on this potentially great side-scroller.

Due to challenging issues encountered during the process of adapting the game for the Xbox Series X and Series S, the release of “HAAK”, a side-scrolling platformer/action game that initially debuted in 2020 via Steam Early Access before its full release on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2022, has been called off on these specific consoles. However, a PlayStation 5 version is still scheduled for the future.

On social media platform X, developer Blingame announced that the Xbox version of the game has been canceled due to certification issues with Microsoft, stating that they’re unable to pass the game through the Xbox certification process.

“On X, the message reads: ‘Thank you so much for your aid and consideration.’ Yet, while attempting to bring our game to Xbox, we faced numerous hurdles. A straightforward task became challenging due to various issues in the Microsoft Partner Center, which hindered us from successfully registering our account. Even Microsoft’s support service system encountered bugs, making it difficult to submit queries about our problems. This is astonishing for developers! We shared our predicament with ID@Xbox, but they appeared unable to assist as this issue seems to be beyond their jurisdiction and appears to be a matter for Microsoft.”

In essence, the statement goes on to explain that porting our game for Xbox would have only taken about two weeks, but instead, we spent over 14 months working through the process of applying for game publication and completing Microsoft Partner identity registration. This whole ordeal has been extremely challenging because we see the excitement from Xbox gamers, yet we’ve found it hard to tackle the issues that arise. We eagerly want to share the tale of HAAK with more players, but our budget for development is incredibly limited, and we can no longer wait any longer. Consequently, we’ve made the difficult decision to forego the Xbox platform release. We deeply lament this outcome, but we’ve given it our all.

Currently, Xbox hasn’t responded to the ongoing situation. For several reasons, we anticipate they may remain silent, but should that change, we promise to promptly revise our report.

Speaking as a dedicated gamer, let me share some exciting insights about a gem that’s been making waves in the gaming community – HAAK, released in 2022. I haven’t seen it rated by Metacritic, but on Steam, an impressive 90% of the 2,345 user reviews have given it a thumbs-up, earning it a “Very Positive” rating. This is one of the highest accolades a game can receive on Steam, which means Xbox enthusiasts might be missing out on an outstanding side-scrolling adventure!
