As a long-time fan of the Alien franchise, I must say that this summer has been nothing short of spectacular for sci-fi enthusiasts like myself. From the record-breaking success of Deadpool & Wolverine to the underwhelming performance of Borderlands, it seemed like the universe was teasing us with a glimmer of hope. And then, just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, Alien: Romulus graced our screens!
As a long-time fan of science fiction films, I must admit that this summer has been nothing short of thrilling at the box office! The success of Deadpool and Wolverine surpassing $1 billion and setting new records is truly remarkable. However, it was disheartening to see Borderlands bomb during its opening weekend last week.
Based on reports from Deadline, the debut domestic weekend earnings for Alien: Romulus are projected to range between $40 million and $42 million. Simultaneously, the movie is anticipated to garner approximately $60 million internationally during the same period, resulting in a total worldwide opening of around $100 million. Notably, the film is performing exceptionally well in China, with an expected weekend gross of $23 million. The latest release from 20th Century Studios marks another significant box office success for Disney, following swift earnings of over $1 billion for Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.
What Is Alien: Romulus About?
The upcoming movie, titled “Romulus,” is being marketed as a spin-off rather than a direct sequel in the “Alien” series, and it will revolve around a team of young space explorers encountering the most dreadful life form known to existence. According to director Alvarez, a deleted scene from James Cameron’s “Aliens,” featuring young colonists, served as the inspiration for the storyline behind Romulus.
He shared that his initial idea was to present the subject from an unusual perspective, focusing on characters who aren’t experts or scientists; instead, they are young and inexperienced. He found this approach intriguing because it allowed ordinary people to take center stage in the narrative, mirroring the audience’s own lack of familiarity with space travel. When characters are portrayed as professionals, their knowledge can overshadow the viewer’s understanding. However, when they’re still learning, like teenagers figuring out how to use an airlock, it creates a more relatable experience for the audience.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “Growing up, their parents were shipmates, which is how they became friends. They’re essentially each other’s only family, and their bond runs deep. It feels more like a sibling relationship, with some of them even sharing living quarters. The movie explores the concept of siblinghood, and surprisingly, the main plot involving Romulus and Weyland-Yutani ties into this as well.”
Title character, Romulus, is played by Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu. Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues (Don’t Breathe 2), based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett.
