Netflix's One Piece Rumor Suggests Katey Sagal Is Set to Bring Kureha to Life

As a long-time fan of both animation and Katey Sagal’s exceptional acting, I can’t help but feel a thrill at the possibility of her joining the cast of Netflix’s One Piece. Her rich voice and charisma have been the backbone of numerous iconic characters in shows like Sons of Anarchy and Married… with Children, and Dr. Kureha seems to be a role tailor-made for her talent.

Netflix’s hit series One Piece has resumed filming, with focus shifting towards season two production. Scarcely a month ago, South Africa welcomed back the One Piece crew as they embarked on season two, and the principal cast is once again suited up. With fresh faces joining the team, the upcoming Netflix season of One Piece is set to introduce some notable characters including Tony Tony Chopper and Nico Robin. Naturally, Dr. Kureha will be part of the mix, and speculation swirls that Katey Sagal might be taking charge of her role.

Speculation about Sagal potentially joining the cast of “One Piece” started some time ago, following the creators’ response to rumors that Jamie Lee Curtis would play Kureha. However, the show’s team has confirmed that Curtis will not take on the coveted role, despite persistent fan petitions. This is due to scheduling conflicts, as Curtis is currently filming “Freaky Friday 2,” which doesn’t align with the production timeline for “One Piece” season two. Nevertheless, there are rumors that Sagal could be a possible replacement.

The actress, well-known for roles on “Sons of Anarchy” and “Married… with Children”, has long been favored to play Kureha. Following Curtis’ confession, online viewers eagerly tuned into a recent interview with Sagal. During this interview, she was asked about her upcoming project, and in response, the actress hinted as follows:

I’ve been fortunate enough to stumble upon something truly remarkable during my years of exploration and innovation. However, due to a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), I am bound by strict confidentiality, preventing me from disclosing details about this groundbreaking discovery. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, as I yearn to share the potential impact it could have on our world.

Indeed, while Sagal didn’t specifically cite a project, her comments do seem consistent with the Netflix series “One Piece.” Filming for this show is currently underway in Cape Town, South Africa – certainly a location that can be described as quite distant. Furthermore, if Sagal’s upcoming project is set to commence soon, this aligns perfectly with the production timeline of “One Piece,” given that it has already started work on season two. As such, it’s possible that Dr. Kureha may be required on set in the near future.

As of now, there’s no official announcement regarding the actress playing Kureha in One Piece Season 2, but Netflix has confirmed that an actress has been chosen for the role. Soon enough, the star who landed this part will be unveiled. If online speculation is correct, it looks like Sagal could be the fortunate actress joining Chopper on screen. To catch up on One Piece Season 1, you can find it streaming on Netflix now, and Season 2 is expected to premiere in 2025.
