New Nintendo Direct Announced for This Week, But It's Not What You Expect

As a longtime Nintendo enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in their iconic worlds, I must admit that this upcoming Direct is a bit of a curveball. While I was eagerly anticipating news on the Switch successor or perhaps a sneak peek at some exciting new titles, I find myself intrigued by Nintendo’s decision to focus on the new Nintendo Museum instead.

Nintendo has revealed when its upcoming Direct event for 2024 is scheduled, but it’s something different from what fans might anticipate. Besides the usual Nintendo Direct events that focus on forthcoming Switch games, Nintendo has also held special one-off presentations in the past about various topics. A prime example of this was observed before the opening of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios and the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Now, a similar Direct event will occur tomorrow, focusing on a topic other than games themselves.

According to Nintendo’s official X account, the gaming giant has announced that they will present a new Direct on August 19th at 6:00pm ET/3:00pm PT. The focus of this presentation will be the upcoming Nintendo Museum in Japan, which is scheduled to open this fall. Earlier in late 2023, Nintendo unveiled plans for this museum dedicated to their history and mentioned that it would be completed in 2024. Now that construction has been finished a few months ago, Nintendo is excited to share what visitors can expect at the museum.

As a lifelong Nintendo fan, I was eagerly anticipating the upcoming Direct, hoping to catch a glimpse of the rumored “Switch 2.” However, my excitement quickly dwindled as I learned that the presentation would solely focus on the Nintendo Museum and would only last approximately ten minutes. Disappointed, I couldn’t help but feel let down by this decision, especially since there will be no game announcements or mentions of the Switch successor during the showcase. As someone who has grown up with Nintendo consoles, it feels like they are missing an opportunity to engage their passionate fanbase and create excitement for the future of gaming on their platforms. I can’t help but wonder if this decision was made due to concerns about leaks or other factors, but either way, it leaves me feeling a bit disheartened as a Nintendo enthusiast.

If you’re bummed about the lack of game announcements in the latest Nintendo Direct, don’t worry! It’s possible that a regular Direct could be just days away. Typically, Nintendo hosts a Direct every September to showcase the games they plan to release during the second half of the year. While we haven’t heard anything about a September Direct yet, there’s no reason to think that Nintendo will miss their annual broadcast within this timeframe.
