Following a lawsuit against the Tuohy family last year, the 38-year-old protagonist of the Academy Award-winning film The Blind Side, has recently shared his feelings about his growing distance from Sean Tuohy and Leigh Anne Tuohy during the ongoing legal dispute.
“For a while now, my mind has been consumed with anguish,” I confided to The New York Times. “Grappling with what I’ve experienced. I yearn to regain the spirit I once had before ‘The Blind Side.’ I’m diligently striving towards that goal.”
As a follower who’s taking legal action against the Tuohy family due to their perceived misuse of my name, image, and likeness for profit-generating speaking engagements, I opted to remain silent when the 2009 film featuring Sandra Bullock and Quinton Aaron hit screens. At that time, I was fully immersed in kickstarting my professional journey with the Baltimore Ravens.
He remarked that playing professional football is tough; it requires absolute dedication at all times. To advance in the NFL, I needed to devote myself entirely to my career rather than distractions off the field.
Oher also fought back against claims that he is now suing the Tuohy family because he needs money.
After putting in a lot of effort during the game, I looked forward to the point where I was finished, and made sure to set aside some funds to savor the experience. The father of four remarked, “I’m comfortable now, having amassed a fortune worth millions.”
Initially, Oher’s story was chronicled in Michael Lewis’ book titled “The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game“. It is worth noting that Lewis mentions in his work that he had a friendship with Sean Tuohy during their childhood. Later on, due to the portrayal of Oher in both the book and subsequent movie, people often referred to him as being “unintelligent”.
In his own words, Oher shared that the NFL folks were curious if he could understand a playbook. Regarding the movie, he found it amusing, almost as if it was someone else’s story being told in a comedy. Initially, it didn’t resonate with him. However, as social media was just emerging, he began to notice comments such as “I’m not smart” and “I’m foolish.” Every article about him seemed to include the title of the movie, The Blind Side, making it feel like an integral part of his identity.
I too delved into the exchanges between me and the Tuohy clan, as outlined in court documents submitted last December (obtained by People magazine), where they alleged that I started requesting funds, labeling them as “thieves.”
In his own words, “I was just struggling to understand what was going on,” is how Oher described the texts. “I didn’t find them unusual.”
Oher claimed that the texts “lit a fuse” and said he began to receive royalty checks for the film for the first time. However, the Tuohys have said that he had already been receiving royalties, a claim he denies.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but express my concern over the ongoing complications between Michael Oher and the Tuohy family. The allegation that he was adopted, contradictory to the truth, has added another layer of intrigue to their story. Despite no adoption having ever occurred, Michael found himself under a conservatorship – a situation that didn’t align with his abilities or circumstances. Ironically, the Tuohys continued to address him as their “adopted son,” which only served to further confuse the matter.
In an affidavit acquired by The New York Times, Leigh Anne clarified that she had used the term “adopted” casually, to express the close bond her family felt with Mr. Oher; it was never intended in a formal, legal sense.
Anne Johnson, representing Oher’s legal team, countered Leigh Anne’s statement previously, explaining that “Adoption” is not a casual term and should not be used carelessly. At 18 years old, he was informed that he was integrated into the family. He accepted this, but it turned out to be untrue.
In September 2023, the conservatorship came to an end as the judge expressed disbelief that such an agreement had been established initially.
In my experience, growing up in an unstable environment, I cannot overlook the profound influence the Tuohy family exerted on my emotional wellbeing.
The very first time I heard the words “I love you” was spoken by Sean and Leigh Anne, he explained. Hearing those words for the first time at 18 years old makes one feel exposed. You lower your defenses, and then suddenly, everything you have is taken away from you. It leaves a painful sensation behind.
He added, “I don’t want to make this about race, but what I found out was that nobody says ‘I love you’ more than coaches and white people. When Black people say it, they mean it.”
