As a long-time Disney movie enthusiast with a soft spot for magical body swaps and family dramas, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming sequel to one of my all-time favorite films, “Freaky Friday 2”. The original 2003 version starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan was a delightful blend of humor, heart, and hormonal teenage angst that I watched countless times as a kid. Now, years later, to see these iconic actresses reunite for a sequel is like finding out that Tanner Hall is finally opening a new wing at Camp Anawanna!
As the wrap of “Freaky Friday” reboot approaches, Jamie Lee Curtis shared heartfelt appreciation for her on-screen daughter, Lindsay Lohan, on social media. The actress from “Halloween” posted a selfie wearing a shirt gifted by Lohan and acknowledged that the movie wouldn’t have been made without her. They had previously co-starred in the 2003 adaptation of “Freaky Friday,” which was based on a 1970s novel. Before this, there were a theatrical version in 1976, a TV version in 1995, and a musical version in 2018. However, this is the first sequel Disney has produced from the book, making “Freakier Friday” the fifth adaptation but the first to continue the storyline.
In response, Lohan expressed warm feelings and appreciation towards Curtis’s post, hinting at exciting and playful work encounters in their future. Here is Curtis’s original post:
Back in June, the ball finally got rolling on the next installment of our beloved “Freaky Friday,” a project that’s been close to my heart for quite some time now. For years, Curtis and Lohan have shared the same dream: bringing this magical story back to life if the studio showed interest. Now, we’re making it happen!
Freaky Friday 2 is described as “a continuation of the beloved 2003 film with a unique multigenerational twist.” The storyline suggests that it takes place many years after Tess and Anna experienced their identity swap. Now, Anna has a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they struggle to blend two families, Tess and Anna find out that perhaps lightning can strike the same place twice.
Among the familiar faces making a comeback are Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. New additions to the cast include Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. The production will be helmed by director Nisha Ganatra.
