Phil Donahue, Talk Show Legend and Husband of Marlo Thomas, Dead at 88

As a devoted fan, I find myself deeply saddened by the passing of Phil Donahue, a television pioneer whose groundbreaking work and captivating presence graced our screens for decades. His impact on the world of talk shows is immeasurable – he was the trailblazer who introduced studio audience participation to TV, a concept that has since become ubiquitous in modern-day talk shows.

A TV legend has died.

Phil Donahue, a longtime TV host and the husband of Marlo Thomas, died Aug. 18, his family confirmed to NBC News. He was 88.

On Sunday evening, legendary TV talk show host Phil Donahue, who was 88, passed away peacefully at home after a prolonged illness. He was surrounded by his wife of 44 years, Marlo Thomas, his sister, children, grandchildren, and his cherished golden retriever named Charlie. The family confirmed the news in an official statement.

For several decades, the well-known television host launched his career in the late ’60s with “The Phil Donahue Show,” later known as just “Donahue.” This groundbreaking show was the first to incorporate audience participation on TV talk shows. The program continued until 1996 and garnered Donahue a grand total of 20 Emmy Awards.

Additionally, Donahue frequently guest-starred on well-known programs such as Blossom, The Bold and the Beautiful, Who’s the Boss?, Ellen, and Frasier, usually portraying his own character.

Over the past few years, I’ve been practically glued to every screen showing my beloved TV icon, but lately, he seemed to vanish from the limelight. The last time I caught a glimpse of him was back in May when, right there at the White House, none other than President Joe Biden bestowed upon him the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom. It was a moment I’ll cherish forever!

In terms of his personal circumstances, Donahue was married to Margaret Cooney from 1958 until 1975. Together, they had children named Michael, Kevin, Daniel, Mary Rose, and James. Tragically, their son James passed away in 2014 at the age of 51 due to an aneurysm.

In 1980, he got married to Thomas, who was 86 years old at the time. This was after they had met each other when Thomas, the former star of “That Girl,” made an appearance on his talk show.

In the year 2023, Thomas revealed the key to a lasting marriage to TopMob News, stating that it consisted of “paying attention, expressing love, and maintaining passion.”

Thomas clarified to TopMob, “It’s important for you both to listen to each other. I realized after around a decade that Phil didn’t primarily seek solutions from me, but rather he valued my listening skills more than my eagerness to provide them.”

In terms of gifts exchanged over the years, it was mentioned earlier that this couple particularly valued giving their time above all else.

Thomas suggested, “Time is truly the most valuable present you can share with one another.” He added, “I’m not particularly fond of material gifts like jewelry. On our first wedding anniversary, instead of exchanging presents, we decided to pool our money that would have been spent on luxurious items and use it for a trip. Ever since then, for every anniversary, we’ve chosen to invest in experiences by spending quality time together, exploring new places.”
