Friday the 13th TV Show Crystal Lake Gets IT Prequel Showrunner

As a gamer who grew up with the chilling tales of Jason Voorhees and his blood-soaked adventures, I can’t help but feel a rush of nostalgia when hearing about the latest developments in the Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake. The appointment of Brad Caleb Kane as co-showrunner, who seems to have a deep affinity for all things slasher, is undoubtedly a step in the right direction.

The makers of the prequel series for “Friday the 13th” have appointed Brad Caleb Kane, who was previously involved with “It: Welcome to Derry”, to take over the showrunner role. Both franchises, “Friday the 13th” and “It”, are exploring streaming platforms to broaden their reach, with Peacock developing “Crystal Lake”, a spinoff of “Friday the 13th”, and HBO/Max creating “It: Welcome to Derby”. Initially, Bryan Fuller was slated to serve as the showrunner for “Crystal Lake”, but he stepped down in May. Now, with this position vacant, A24 has tapped Kane, who is also working on the co-showrunning of the “It” spinoff, to assume the role of creator, writer, and executive producer for “Crystal Lake”.

Brad Caleb Kane expressed in a statement that since he first witnessed Jason Voorhees pop out someone’s eyeball (in stunning 3D) when he was just eight years old, his creative journey had always been destined to intersect with the enigmatic figure of “The Man Behind The Mask.” Growing up during the golden era of slasher films, nothing had a greater impact on his childhood than the Friday The 13th series, and he considers it the epitome of this genre. He is thrilled about the opportunity to add another chapter to this legendary franchise, especially given the bold collaboration between Peacock and A24.

Bryan Fuller comments on Crystal Lake departure

Following rumors about behind-the-scenes alterations on the Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake, Bryan Fuller (known for his work on Hannibal) announced his departure from the project as A24 opted to steer the show towards a new path.

In simpler terms, Fuller mentioned he has some familiarity with reimagining traditional horror stories. Such projects call for a unique perspective that not only surpasses and changes the original, but also satisfies what viewers anticipate – a challenging and daring undertaking. It means convincing others to join him on this journey.

In similar fashion as the successful series “Hannibal”, when it functions well, it can yield significant impact for both storytellers and viewers. I couldn’t help but feel an immense sense of pride in the work my co-showrunner Jim Danger Gray and I were able to achieve alongside our exceptional writing team, despite the hurdles we encountered. However, unfortunately, A24 has chosen a different path with the material for reasons outside of our control. We fervently hope that the end result will be something “Friday the 13th” fans worldwide can appreciate and enjoy.

What is Peacock and A24’s Crystal Lake about?

Details about Crystal Lake remain unclear, but it marks A24’s first significant endeavor venturing into an existing franchise. It’s expected that the narrative will carry on the escapades of Jason Voorhees, the iconic character known for his hockey mask, who is central to the multi-faceted Friday the 13th media franchise.

Previously, Fuller mentioned that all elements from the feature films are available for use, which means both adult and child versions of the slasher killer Jason Voorhees could potentially appear. He further explained that storylines could take us to Hell or even space, but this doesn’t necessarily mean they will. If the series lasts ten seasons, he plans to advocate strongly for an out-of-this-world space adventure.

With Fuller no longer leading, and Kane taking charge instead, it remains to be seen what A24 and Peacock have in store for the Crystal Lake series.
