As a lifelong fan of comics, I can confidently say that James Gunn is the perfect choice to bring Animal Man to the big screen. With his knack for breathing new life into seemingly obscure characters and his uncanny ability to blend humor with horror, he’s the ideal director for this unique superhero tale.
James Gunn has made a name for himself by taking B-list comic book characters and turning them into household favorites. With Marvel Studios, he played a key role in making the Guardians of the Galaxy one of Marvel’s most successful intellectual properties. He then repeated this success with DC, working on projects like Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and soon enough, the Creature Commandos. Now that Gunn is working on Superman, there’s a character from DC Comics he might want to focus on next for a film or series – Buddy Baker, also known as Animal Man.
Despite the character being relatively unknown, the fact that they had a highly successful comic run makes them an ideal candidate for adaptation by the filmmaker.
During DC Comics’ New 52 reboot, Jeff Lemire and Travel Foreman crafted a tale reminiscent of Gunnian narrative style. This intriguing narrative dissects Animal Man, a hero who seems to possess unremarkable abilities, and subjects him to a story that would excite David Lynch. It delves deeper into the idea of The Red, an otherworldly force linking all life forms and organisms. Through this supernatural realm, the character experiences grotesque transformations as the narrative unfolds with elements of body horror and echoes of a creature-feature film.
With a resume boasting both “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Slither,” and an aptitude for creating intense superhero movies centered around seemingly insignificant characters, James Gunn’s potential adaptation of “Animal Man” could shape up to be an exceptional superhero film, reminiscent of the underworld.
What is on the DC Universe slate?
According to Gunn and Safran’s unveiling, the launch lineup for “Gods and Monsters” by DC Studios is set to feature movies such as “Superman: Legacy”, “The Brave and the Bold”, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”, “Swamp Thing”, and “The Authority”. Additionally, they’ve planned HBO Max TV shows like “Waller”, “Booster Gold”, “Lanterns”, “Paradise Lost”, and an animated “Creature Commandos” series.
“Gunn and Safran expressed their delight when they were chosen to care for the DC characters that have been dear to them since their childhood. They eagerly anticipate working alongside exceptional writers, directors, and actors worldwide to construct a unified, multidimensional universe. This universe will provide room for each artist’s unique expression while maintaining the essence of the characters they adore, such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and many more. Their dedication to these characters is matched only by their belief in the inspiring potential they symbolize. They are thrilled about revitalizing global cinematic experiences as they bring some of the most magnificent, beautiful, and epic tales to life.”
Kick-off for the DC Universe begins in December with the launch of “Creature Commandos,” followed by the cinema debut of “Superman” on July 11, 2025.
