The Acolyte cancelled after one season – Lucasfilm not going ahead with season 2

As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of immersion in the dynamic world of cinema, I’ve witnessed the ebb and flow of creative endeavors that both captivate and confound audiences. The Acolyte, the latest addition to the Star Wars saga, has left me with a mix of feelings, much like watching a lightsaber battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker – intriguing yet tinged with a sense of disappointment.

Star Wars prequel series The Acolyte has been cancelled after one season, Lucasfilm has confirmed.

In a timeframe about a century before the storyline of The Phantom Menace unfolds, during what the studio calls “The High Republic” period, when the Jedi Order was experiencing its peak strength.

In my perspective as a film aficionado, this narrative delves into the lives of siblings, Osha and Mae, portrayed brilliantly by Amandla Stenberg. As the plot unfurls, it subtly unveils a sinister conspiracy that enmeshes key figures from the Order, all sharing a troubling, concealed past.

The Acolyte stirred controversy within the Star Wars community, with some critics accused of deliberately lowering its ratings on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. On these sites, it currently holds a user score of 18% and 4.1 out of 10.

It’s important to note that while the show faced criticism for its pace and script problems, it’s also crucial to acknowledge that certain discussions online focused on the representation of racial diversity and the portrayal of LGBTQ+ themes in the series.

Before the series premiere, the lead actress Stenberg revealed that she received an overwhelming amount of racially offensive comments on social media, sadly mirroring the experiences of previous Star Wars actors like Kelly Marie Tran, Moses Ingram, and John Boyega.

It seems that the unpredictability of online discussions may have played a role in the cancellation of “The Acolyte”, as one industry insider told The Hollywood Reporter that it had a negative impact on how the public viewed the series.

To be completely honest, I found myself somewhat disappointed with the viewing numbers the show was pulling. Week after week, it seemed to miss out on the coveted top 10 spots among original streaming series, according to Nielsen’s rankings.

At present, it’s uncertain if the incomplete narrative of The Acolyte might find continuation through a comic book, novel, or another extended universe venture. However, some enthusiastic fans are already clamoring for additional content.

Apart from Stenberg, the cast also includes Manny Jacinto known for “The Good Place”, Lee Jung-jae recognized for “Squid Game”, Carrie-Anne Moss famous from “The Matrix”, and Rebecca Henderson, who starred in “Russian Doll”.

The Acolyte is available to stream on Disney Plus. Sign up to Disney Plus from £4.99 a month.
