As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed countless matches and feuds over the years, I can confidently say that the potential showdown between John Cena and Randy Orton is one that I have eagerly awaited since their first encounter back in 2001. Their rivalry spanning over two decades, with a total of 123 encounters, makes this matchup a historical event that no true wrestling fan would want to miss.
Following John Cena’s declaration of his in-ring retirement tour, there’s been a flurry of conjecture about who will face him for the final time. Contenders from various leagues have expressed their desire to battle with Big Match John, among them WWE Intercontinental Champion Bron Breakker and TNA’s Joe Hendry. However, one name consistently surfaces in fan discussions: Randy Orton. According to CageMatch.net, Cena and Orton have squared off in a single match on 123 occasions, dating back to their first meeting in 2001. Their rivalry officially ignited at the WWE SummerSlam 2007 where they fought for the WWE Championship. Over the years, they’ve had ten pay-per-view matches and their last televised encounter took place on the February 2017 edition of WWE SmackDown.
Randy Orton Spoke With John Cena About One Final Match
The Viper has Big Match John in his sights.
As a gaming enthusiast, I recently had a fascinating chat on “What’s On Your Mind?” with none other than Cody Rhodes. During our conversation, Randy Orton shared an intriguing tidbit – he bumped into John Cena just moments before Cena announced his retirement tour at the WWE Money in the Bank event back in July.
Orton stated, “I ran into John prior to his retirement speech. It had been some time since we last met. I wasn’t aware he was attending. We managed to chat for about ten minutes. As far as I knew, he would stick around, much like myself, for as long as his health allowed. Of course, he has other engagements and my life is different. I admire him pursuing Hollywood. If possible, I’d do the same, but it requires a lot and I have other commitments; I don’t believe I can dedicate the time.”
Later on, Orton probed if Cena was open to a last bout between them, yet Cena made it clear that he lets the WWE creative department handle any strategic decisions regarding his matches.
Speaking in my own voice, I posed the question, “What are your thoughts?” To which he replied, “Well, I’ve never been the one to pitch ideas. I always strive to give my best with what I’m given.” His words resonated deeply with me, as they mirrored my own approach. “That’s exactly how I operate,” I thought. “I’ve never been handed a detailed plan for six months in advance. I’ve always been blessed with the opportunities I’ve received, and I make the best of them.” When I shared this with him, I felt a bit naive, like a ‘mark.’ He quickly put my concerns to rest, saying, “If creative comes up with it, perhaps we’ll consider it.”
“I would love to work with the man and have a couple of TVs or more to set it up and really make something special of it. No matter how much we faced each other back in the day, almost to the point where people were sick of it, when people look back and think of it, ‘Orton and Cena was this amazing rivalry.’ We can go out there, have some fun, and tear the place down. I would love to do that. I guess, according to John, if it organically happens, it’ll happen. I think it’ll happen. I think it’s in the cards.”
Cena’s farewell tour kicks off in January 2025.
