Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Director Tim Burton Addresses Making Sequels to His Other Classics

As a dedicated fan who has grown up with Tim Burton’s enchanting cinematic universe, I find his recent statements about refraining from reviving other dormant creations to be a bittersweet revelation. On one hand, it’s intriguing to see an artist as innovative and visionary as Burton step out of his comfort zone and explore new territories – in this case, the TV series “Wednesday” and the upcoming “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”

Filmmaker Tim Burton has given fans many timeless movies over his career, and his upcoming film “Beetlejuice 2” will take us back to the universe he established in the original 1988 movie. However, don’t expect him to resurrect any other of his long-dormant ideas anytime soon. Lately, Burton has mentioned that he was contemplating stepping away from studio directing completely, but his involvement with the Netflix series “Wednesday” and the unique premise for the “Beetlejuice” sequel have lured him back into the studio system. The new “Beetlejuice 2” is scheduled to hit theaters on September 6th.

At a recent press gathering, as reported by /Film, Burton was inquired whether this experience prompted him to revisit any other of his projects. His response was negative. In fact, he might humorously express the opposite sentiment. Since he has dabbled a bit in this, and if he were to do something next, he expressed that he wants to work on something where… It seems he almost retired from filmmaking after his last project. As he put it, he just wasn’t feeling the studio environment anymore.

The “latest” Disney live-action adaptation that Burton mentions is the 2019 remake of “Dumbo,” one of Disney’s numerous efforts to bring animated classics into the realm of live-action. However, Burton’s “Dumbo” didn’t meet expectations at the box office, grossing $353.3 million globally. Critically, it also failed to impress, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a score of just 46% positive reviews based on over 300 reviews.

Reflecting on it, Burton mentioned he took a break for a TV appearance, specifically on Wednesday in Romania, as a means of refreshing or revitalizing himself. Consequently, he had no eagerness to produce a sequel; instead, his goal was to create this particular movie. He implied that he has adjusted how he will approach future projects.

As a film enthusiast who’s always excited about Tim Burton’s work, I find it intriguing that he’s only directed one sequel, “Batman Returns” from 1992, which has garnered much praise from critics and fans alike. Yet, movies like “Edward Scissorhands,” “Sleepy Hollow,” and even “Corpse Bride” all hold immense potential for further installments. It seems, though, that Burton himself isn’t keen on revisiting those stories.
