Avengers 5 Reportedly Would Have Featured Shang-Chi in Lead Role

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and curiosity about the latest developments regarding Shang-Chi. The news that Simu Liu’s character was set to have a major role in Avengers 5, initially titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, has been replaced with the intriguing title, Avengers: Doomsday.

According to recent reports, it seems that Shang-Chi was slated for a significant part in what was then known as Avengers 5. Prior to Marvel Studio’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday night, the fate of the fifth Avengers movie was uncertain. The film, originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, was set to focus on Jonathan Majors’ character, Kang the Conqueror, as the primary antagonist and delve into the multiverse. However, following Majors’ conviction for third-degree reckless assault and harassment of his ex-partner, Marvel Studios removed him from the project and rebranded the film as Avengers: Doomsday, featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom. It appears that prior to these events, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi was intended to be one of the main characters in Avengers 5.

As reported by Inverse, Simu Liu’s character Shang-Chi was initially slated as a primary character in Avengers 5, also known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, since the movie has been revamped to Avengers: Doomsday, it remains uncertain if Shang-Chi will continue to play a key role in the film’s narrative.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton remains attached to direct the sequel to “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” with Simu Liu set to reprise his role as the main character. However, as of 2025, “Shang-Chi 2” has not been officially scheduled for release by Marvel Studios. Fortunately, Liu has provided an update on the film, confirming that it is still in development.

Liu shared with The Press Trust of India, “Much of it is beyond my level of authority, but rest assured, it’s coming to pass. I’m simply thrilled to contribute to it, and trust me, it’s going to be extraordinary. Unfortunately, I can’t disclose any more details.”

Liu described a similar scenario to one he shared with ComicBook away from the premiere of Arthur the King: “Usually, when I receive a call saying, ‘Hey, this is where you’re involved and here’s where you’ll appear, and here’s when you should be ready to keep quiet.’ That’s generally how things go. Destin is an exceptional director, and we’re thrilled he’s joining us for the sequel. He’ll be focusing on that project, and we can’t wait to see his ideas unfold. I believe he’ll do a fantastic job.”
