Little Nightmares 3 Gets New Trailer at Gamescom Opening Night Live

As a long-time fan of the Little Nightmares series, I must admit that my anticipation for the third installment has been building like a crescendo since its announcement last year. The shift from Tarsier Studios to Supermassive Games initially gave me pause, but the latest trailer at Gamescom ONL 2022 has eased some of my concerns. While it may not have revealed any major surprises, the familiar co-op gameplay and eerie atmosphere were more than enough to get my heart racing.

In the previous year, during Gamescom Opening Night Live, publisher Bandai Namco unveiled Little Nightmares 3. It was announced that the original creators, Tarsier Studios, have moved on to another project, and Supermassive Games (known for creating Until Dawn) will now be handling the development. Initially intended for release this year, the decision was made to postpone Little Nightmares 3 until 2025. However, this delay allowed the team to present a new trailer at this year’s Gamescom ONL, exciting fans. Although it didn’t showcase much groundbreaking content, the 90-second video did offer a peek into the cooperative gameplay style of the upcoming title.

Enthusiasts of the Little Nightmares series will likely recognize the style of gameplay depicted in the trailer for Little Nightmares 3. Although the game has switched studios, it doesn’t seem to be undergoing drastic changes. The trailer showcases cooperative partners using light to solve puzzles and includes some simple combat scenarios. Additionally, there are instances where one character must perform a specific action to allow the other player to bypass an enemy, which aligns with what we typically see in Little Nightmares games.

Although Supermassive Games is known for creating cooperative games for multiple players on a single console, Little Nightmares 3 won’t offer this feature at launch. This might seem unusual at first glance, but consider that the developers are striving to create an eerie ambiance where clear communication with a partner is difficult. Consequently, excluding couch co-op and offering online-only multiplayer seems like a logical decision for maintaining the intended atmosphere. However, it’s possible that couch co-op could be added post-launch, but for now, Little Nightmares 3 is committed to its current gameplay setup.

The upcoming game titled “Little Nightmares 3” is planned to debut in the year 2025, available across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC systems. Although Bandai Namco hasn’t set a specific release date yet, it appears that the launch will take place during the first half of the year. This timeline will provide Supermassive with ample time to shift their developers towards “The Dark Pictures Anthology: Directive 8020”, another game announced earlier today during the Gamescom Opening Night Live pre-show, also slated for a 2025 release but expected to be shipped in the fall. Historically, this series has launched new games in October to take advantage of the spooky season, and it seems they plan to continue that trend.
