What you need to know

  • I recently saw a preview of MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, with the developers showing gameplay as Indy explores different regions around the world.
  • During a group Q&A session following the preview, game director Jerk Gustafsson and creative director Axel Torvanius confirmed that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is the largest game the studio has ever made.
  • MachineGames previously worked on multiple Wolfenstein titles, and has also contributed to remastered versions of Quake, Quake 2, and DOOM II.

As a seasoned tech enthusiast with a soft spot for adventure games, I must say that my anticipation for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle by MachineGames is at an all-time high! Having followed their work closely since the days of Wolfenstein: The New Order, it’s fascinating to see them take on such an iconic character as Indiana Jones.

Players’ adventures with Indiana Jones are going to be quite substantial.

As a tech-loving enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exclusive insights about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle! During a recent chat with game director Jerk Gustafsson and creative director Axel Torvanius, they hinted at the grand scale of this upcoming adventure. While they deliberately avoided giving a specific number of playable hours, they both emphasized that it will be the largest game ever crafted by MachineGames. To put it in perspective, even if you decide to follow only the main storyline, it’ll still outshine any previous projects from the studio!

The game’s layout significantly contributes to a lot of its aspects. Indiana Jones: The Great Circle adventure spans several locations, such as Egypt and the Himalayas. These historical places aren’t just linear missions, they also offer opportunities for exploration. There are optional puzzles to solve and treasures to discover, which can aid Indy in advancing further by earning more money and acquiring new abilities.

At Gamescom 2024, we announced that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be released on December 9, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Moreover, a PlayStation 5 version is planned to arrive in Spring 2025.

MachineGames has a long history of Nazi-killing games

Players encounter untrustworthy individuals such as Nazis and their allies in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and luckily for them, the titular hero, Indiana Jones, is armed with useful tools like his whip and pistol to maintain a legacy of imaginative Nazi-fighting that MachineGames’ games are known for.

Machine Studios has been involved in creating three installments of the Wolfenstein series, beginning with Wolfenstein: The New Order released in 2014. They followed this up with the debut of Wolfenstein: The New Colossus in 2017. In collaboration with Arkane Lyon, they also developed a smaller, experimental title called Wolfenstein: Youngblood, which hit the shelves in 2019.

MachineGames has actively collaborated with its related studio, id Software, under the umbrella company ZeniMax Media. Together, they develop the id Tech engine and have also teamed up with Nightdive Studios on remastering games like Quake, Quake 2, and DOOM + DOOM II.

Based in Uppsala, Sweden, MachineGames has also grown by establishing a second studio, which was opened in Sundvall. It’s projected that this additional studio will reach full staffing by the year 2025.
