Robert Downey Jr. Reveals MCU Return as Doctor Doom Started a Year Ago

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in Marvel’s cinematic universe, I can hardly contain my excitement about Robert Downey Jr.’s dual return to the franchise. With his portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man and Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom across two upcoming movies and a new theme park ride at Disneyland’s Avengers Campus, it feels like I’ve just struck gold in a never-ending loot box!

After playing Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over ten years, Academy Award winner Robert Downey Jr. is going back to the franchise. Not only has he been cast as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” films, but it was announced at this month’s D23 Expo that Downey will also reprise his Iron Man role for a new theme park ride at Disneyland’s Avengers Campus. In a recent interview on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Downey discussed the background of how these two Marvel returns came about, explaining the significant roles played by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Disney CEO Bob Iger in the process.

About a year ago, Feige and I had maintained contact, and we’re friends. Similarly, Favreau, Feige, and I have stayed in touch. I’m also close with the Russo brothers. We have various business ventures ongoing. This group of us, which I call fellow travelers, gave me an instinct to approach Bob Iger. I had a concept for how I could help what was happening at the parks and their location-based projects.

“Downey went on to explain his visit to Bob’s house, an experience he found difficult to articulate. He’s had numerous remarkable encounters, but this one stood out. They’d often go to Iger’s place, sit down, and discuss their desires. Iger responded positively, and Downey was taken aback, saying, ‘He likes it.’ They were then invited to the Imagineering campus. If you want to know who can’t be easily amazed, it’s Feige and Downey. The things happening there surpassed his expectations of what was achievable. It was awe-inspiring, and it’s the only place where he could offer an audience, something they might long for, without compromising future developments in entertainment. Where else would you go back? So, it’s this strange, unusual situation, and if it falls apart, we’ll just remake what some call the best film ever made.”
