As a seasoned gamer and horror enthusiast with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the announcement of “Directive 8020” by Supermassive Games has sent shivers down my spine and sparked a sense of anticipation that’s electrifying. Having been captivated by their previous works like “Until Dawn” and “The Quarry”, I am eager to delve into another chilling tale they have in store for us.
Supermassive Games, renowned for creating chilling games such as “Until Dawn” and “The Quarry”, consistently pushes boundaries in the horror genre through its ongoing Dark Pictures Anthology series. This collection of terrifying titles includes some of the top modern releases in this genre. Intriguingly, Supermassive has been hinting at the beginning of Season 2 for a while now. At the Gamescom Opening Night Live pre-show event, they finally unveiled details about “Directive 8020”. This upcoming game will introduce its lead character and is planned for release in 2025.
Of course, DPA fans have known Directive 8020 was the next game up. Each entry in the anthology series includes a short teaser of the next game, so we technically got our first look at the game in The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me. That said, this was the first reveal that the game will star Lashana Lynch as the main protagonist. Fans of films like Captain Marvel, No Time to Die, and Matilda the Musical will recognize the veteran actress. This is her first video game project and she’s voicing Brianna Young, an astronaut on the ecology ship Cassiopeia that’s crashlanded on a planet found twelve light-years from Earth.
In a first for the franchise, Directive 8020 is set to become an alien-themed horror game. The development team hints that the mysterious alien lifeform can mimic other characters, making it uncertain whom you can trust as you delve into Tau Ceti f. With Supermassive’s signature couch co-op gameplay, the possibility of unintentionally harming your friends adds an extra dose of terror to the overall experience. Over the following months, we eagerly await details about the additional characters who will join Young on this perilous expedition.
It’s worth mentioning that Directive 8020 seems to be abandoning The Dark Pictures Anthology label and opting for “A Dark Pictures Game” instead. Whether this change signifies anything significant isn’t certain, but it could suggest a possible shift towards more action within the franchise. Additionally, this will mark the first game in the series since the sad demise of Tony Pankhurst, who was responsible for the motion capture of The Curator character, a staple in every Dark Pictures title. It remains unclear if Supermassive is planning to eliminate the character or recast it, so they should clarify this matter soon.
Directive 8020 is scheduled to launch in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
