2021 has seen numerous computer manufacturers incorporating AI-enhancing Neural Processing Units (NPUs) into their laptop processors, and Dell’s newest Inspiron 16 (model 7640) follows suit by including this technology.

Over the past fortnight, I’ve had the opportunity to put the Inspiron 16 Plus through its paces, equipped with an AI-boosting Intel Core Ultra 7 processor. From my personal perspective, this laptop seems tailor-made for creative professionals and busy individuals alike. The device boasts impressive graphical capabilities that smoothly run 3D modeling software and even accommodate some gaming experiences.

Due to its competitive pricing, it offers better affordability compared to certain Dell laptops, yet it doesn’t compromise on the processing power required for diverse situations.

Instead of being limited to predefined setups, Dell’s Inspiron 16 Plus website gives me the freedom to customize the internal components according to my preferences, starting at a base price of $849.99. However, opting for upgrades such as an RTX graphics card, a stronger Intel Core i7 CPU, or larger storage capacity can bump up the laptop’s total cost substantially.

As someone who has been using laptops for over two decades now, I can confidently say that the device I recently reviewed offers exceptional value for its price. The laptop sports an impressive MSRP of $1,499.99 and boasts an AI-enhanced Intel Core Ultra 7-155H CPU, a powerful NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 GPU, 16GB DDR5 memory, and a generous 1TB solid-state storage drive. Although it’s not exactly a budget option, considering the high-end components it houses, I believe it’s a worthwhile investment for anyone seeking a versatile laptop that can handle demanding tasks with ease. The device’s performance has certainly impressed me and made me reconsider my previous assumptions about what one could expect from a laptop at this price point. Kudos to the manufacturers for delivering such a well-rounded machine!

As previously stated, you can buy one of these laptops from Dell or Amazon. However, at the time of writing, I didn’t see this model selling at Best Buy, Walmart, or Newegg. It’s possible it could come to these retailers at a later date.

In my previous Dell laptop reviews, I’ve noted that the company doesn’t frequently change the appearance of its laptop shells. To be precise, the present casing design has been around since mid-2020 and it seems that significant design modifications for this particular model might not occur until a few more years have passed. However, this isn’t necessarily a drawback. Although Dell’s laptops may not be particularly striking, they possess a subtle charm in their minimalist design, making them fit well in any environment due to their simplicity and elegance.

At the bottom of the laptop, you’ll find exhaust fans, while there are air vents on both sides. This setup enables the internal components to cool down and perform optimally. Despite accommodating a lot of hardware, when closed, the laptop is relatively thin. However, compared to some modern laptops available today, it still appears rather chunky.

Regarding its connectivity options, the Inspiron 16 Plus boasts a versatile set, encompassing: one USB-C Thunderbolt 4.0, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, an HDMI 1.4 port, a microSD card slot, a charging port, and a headphone jack. Should the need arise to connect additional PC peripherals, a monitor or TV, it can be done effortlessly.

In my recent analysis, I noticed an interesting discrepancy: last year’s Dell Inspiron 16 Plus model 7630 retained the traditional barrel plug for charging, while contemporary devices typically use a USB-C port. Fortunately, this issue has been addressed in the latest model, the 7640, which now includes a more advanced USB-C cable for charging.

To get a feel for the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus (7640) screen, I invested several hours streaming shows, gaming, and editing Adobe software. Given its 16-inch WVA/IPS panel, I was taken aback by how impressive the viewing angle turned out to be. From the side, it still appears reasonably sharp but slightly less bright.

To be honest, I was taken aback when I noticed that the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus doesn’t offer an OLED display option during configuration, as OLED displays are often preferred for creative and gaming purposes. Instead, you’ll find only touchscreen or non-touchscreen options, with my review focusing on the non-touchscreen panel. Compared to the high-quality OLED displays found on other Dell laptops, this one seems less impressive.

But why doesn’t Dell offer an OLED display for this model? This could be because OLEDs tend to cost a bit more, and the Inspiron 16 Plus is meant to be less expensive than Dell’s flagship laptops. Still, I can’t complain too much about the WVA/IPS. Colors come through well with plenty of contrast to help them pop, and you likely wouldn’t notice how much better an OLED display was unless you had one right next to the laptop to compare it to. That said, if you do a lot of creative work, you might prefer to have an OLED display. 

When I employed a colorimeter on the WVA display, it yielded 100% of sRGB, 81% of Adobe RGB, and 83% of P3, which are generally impressive figures. The contrast and brightness capabilities were also tested, revealing that the display offers a reasonable distinction between light and dark to enhance image dynamics. Although it’s not the top-tier display available, the 16-inch panel is still a worthy choice. My colorimeter registered a maximum of 313 nits in terms of brightness, which aligns with Dell’s claimed figure. However, this level of brightness isn’t particularly high, so the optimal viewing experience will be indoors rather than under direct sunlight.

In the upcoming segment, I’ll delve deeper into the world of gaming. Just a quick note: This display boasts a 60Hz refresh rate which is beneficial for both your demanding 3D modeling tasks and high-speed gaming requirements.

Every time I evaluate a laptop, I put in ample hours with the Inspiron 16 Plus to assess its capabilities. Over a period of two weeks, I employed it for professional tasks, indulged in several gaming hours, worked on Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and subjected it to rigorous benchmark testing. This laptop delivers impressive performance, which, along with the previously mentioned 60Hz display refresh rate, ensures seamless 3D rendering. Remarkably, it can handle some gaming sessions, though it doesn’t compare to top-tier gaming laptops.

In simple terms, when I compared the latest Inspiron 16 Plus (with an Intel Core Ultra 7-155H CPU and RTX 4060 L GPU) to last year’s model during tests, I found that the older PC performed better in CPU benchmark tests. However, the new model really shone in GPU tests, delivering significantly improved results, even though both models have the same graphics card. This suggests that the AI NPU is helping the GPU to some extent, creating a trade-off situation where the overall CPU performance is solid but slightly below my preferred level.

Instead of focusing solely on this particular model, let’s consider other Dell models released this year as well. For instance, Daniel Rubino’s review of the Dell XPS 14 (9440) and Zachary Boddy’s review of the Dell Inspiron Plus (7440) both indicate that machines equipped with a Core Ultra 7-155H processor performed quite similarly in PCMark and Geekbench CPU benchmark tests. This suggests that the latest Inspiron 16 Plus, like its counterparts, is capable of handling everyday office tasks and more demanding workloads, making it an ideal choice for both work and school environments.

Is the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus (7640) an AI PC or a Copilot Plus PC?

It’s probably noteworthy that AI-powered PCs are a recent addition to the market, and here at Windows Central, we’ve gained valuable insights after evaluating multiple models. A key takeaway is that the AI-enhanced Intel Core Ultra processors aren’t as potent as the AI-enhanced Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processors. Consequently, even seemingly ordinary laptops like the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x (Gen 9), which features a Snapdragon X processor, tend to outperform those equipped with an Intel Core Ultra processor, such as the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus. For reference, the Inspiron 16 Plus only got a 12,545 multi-core score in the Geekbench 6 CPU test, while the Yoga Slim 7x earned a 13,687 multi-core score. The same is true for CPU rendering capabilities, where the Inspiron 16 Plus got a multi-core score of 859 while the Yoga Slim 7x earned a 1,009 multi-core score. As such, if processor power is important to you, it might be worth considering a Snapdragon X Elite laptop.

Regarding the graphics performance, prior to putting it through its paces with gaming, I went ahead and downloaded and installed the most recent NVIDIA driver updates. This step maximizes the efficiency of the graphics card. Subsequently, while running Baldur’s Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 at medium to high graphical settings (excluding ray tracing or using low ray tracing), the laptop maintained an average frame rate of approximately 50 to 60 frames per second (FPS).

I also put the laptop’s graphics performance to the test using benchmarks in Cyberpunk 2077, even running advanced features such as DLSS Ray Reconstruction and path tracing at the highest settings. Impressively, it managed an average of around 21 frames per second. Given these demanding specifications, this level of performance is commendable, especially considering it’s not primarily marketed as a gaming device. However, for superior gaming outcomes, opting for one of the best dedicated gaming laptops would be advisable.

Thermals and fan noise

Following a 20-minute CPU stress test on the laptop, I pulled out my thermal camera for temperature readings. Generally speaking, a device performs optimally when it stays significantly under 176 degrees Fahrenheit (or 80 degrees Celsius) to ensure smooth operation. Fortunately, this laptop didn’t encounter any issues in this regard during the test.

The hottest parts of the Inspiron 16 Plus are the vents and bottom, which both measured in at a peak of 117 degrees F (~47 degrees C). This was hot enough that putting this laptop on my lap was uncomfortable to the touch. The center of the keyboard measured in at a peak of 105 degrees F (~40 degrees C) while the area above the keyboard got even hotter, reaching up to 111 degrees F (~43 degrees C). It’s certainly warm, but the keyboard won’t scald your hands. 

During a rigorous graphics test, I took out my sound level meter and noted that the laptop was producing sounds at 51 decibels, which is louder than I find comfortable, mainly because of the whining from the fan. Fortunately, the noise from the fan is only prominent when the CPU or GPU gets overworked, so it’s not always audible.

Dell Inspiron 16 Plus: Battery life

• As always, graphically demanding tasks can reduce battery life to about an hour and a half or less. 
• Dell has finally swapped to a modern USB-C charging cable rather than relying on the old barrel plug.

Modern top-tier laptops typically run for approximately 10 hours on a single charge while executing routine tasks such as operating basic software, browsing the web, or participating in video conferences. It brings me great pleasure to share that the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus not only met this expectation but surpassed it, boasting an average battery life of 11 hours and 54 minutes under regular use conditions, with the screen brightness set around 200 nits and everyday functions being performed.

I’ve personally tested this both anecdotally and scientifically by using the laptop for work and leisure, as well as conducting multiple battery tests. On average, its long battery life lets me accomplish quite a bit without constantly needing to be near an outlet. In fact, after using it for a few weeks, a Windows 11 battery report suggested that the laptop can last approximately 12 hours and 48 minutes. This impressive battery life makes it an excellent choice for people who are always on the move, whether they’re students, creatives, office workers, or busy professionals.

Just like other laptops, using graphically intense software or resource-heavy programs on the Inspiron 16 Plus can significantly shorten battery life. For instance, if you’re working with 3D modeling tools or playing specific games, you might find that the laptop only lasts about an hour and a half without being plugged in.

Previously stated that the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus retains an old-style barrel plug for charging. But, interestingly, the laptop comes with a contemporary USB-C charging cable and can be powered through the USB-C port. This means it’s much more practical to recharge this machine using top-tier portable laptop chargers when required.

In simpler terms, the key arrangement and touch responsiveness of the Inspiron 16 Plus keyboard is quite satisfactory. The keys are adequately spaced to avoid a cramped typing experience, and they respond swiftly to all types of uses.

The biggest nicety here is the fingerprint reader, located on the top right of the keyboard, which doubles as a power button. I easily set up Windows Fingerprint recognition, and the laptop didn’t give me any issues when reading my finger after that. 

Given that this AI and Copilot Plus PCs come equipped, it’s not unexpected to find a dedicated Copilot key nestled between the spacebar and arrow keys. A swift press of this button either reveals or hides the Copilot side menu. Moreover, the keyboard top row is loaded with handy commands such as mute, volume control, play/pause, brightness adjustment, display settings, among others.

While the size of the touchpad could be larger considering the available space within the case, it’s surprisingly efficient, enabling smooth navigation without excessive swipes due to its dimensions approximately 4.5 inches by 3.25 inches.

As someone who appreciates built-in webcam covers, I was thrilled to find a sleek, discreet one on the Inspiron 16 Plus. This convenient physical switch, located along the top edge of the panel, allows me to easily slide it back and forth to control it – a feature I much prefer over electronic shutters.

At several work meetings, I utilized the Inspiron 16 Plus laptop and found its microphone consistently clear and effective at transmitting my voice to colleagues without any problems. Furthermore, the webcam delivers sharp details with accurate colors, but this is only when used in a bright environment – which is typically the case for most webcams.

Regarding the audio setup, there are four speakers positioned in the design: two located beneath the casing and two aligned on top of the keyboard. They can reach a decent volume level, but unfortunately, the bass is not impressive and tends to blend with other sounds. As ever, it’s advisable to invest in high-quality computer speakers for optimal audio performance.

Dell Inspiron 16 Plus: Competition

If you need a computer with superior performance for demanding computational and graphic tasks, I would recommend checking out Dell’s XPS series. In my opinion, the Dell XPS 16 (9640) is a dependable choice that can handle a wide range of tasks. While it may be pricier due to its high-performance components, with configurations starting at $1,699.99 on Dell’s website.

If you’ve been intrigued by the Snapdragon X Elite laptops I’ve mentioned frequently, you might want to explore the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x (Gen 9). It boasts a stunning 14.5-inch OLED screen that delivers vibrant colors and high contrast, perfect for your creative endeavors. Its impressive battery life makes it an ideal choice for those who are frequently on the move. You can purchase this laptop starting at $1,199 from Lenovo, or you might find a deal on it at Best Buy as well.

Considering alternatives to Dell’s Inspiron 16 Plus, the Lenovo Legion Pro 5i is a strong contender, boasting hardware and performance reminiscent of the Dell model. • You want a laptop with an OLED display: I totally get it. OLED panels provide a far better viewing experience for creatives due to their ability to produce true black and make colors pop more. If you’re really focused on getting a laptop with the best display, then the Inspiron 16 Plus’ WVA, while good, isn’t what you’re looking for.
• You need something with a small form factor: Although the simple design of the Inspiron 16 Plus is relatively compact, given all of the hardware this laptop contains, it’s still bulky compared to some other options out there. 

For individuals seeking a versatile laptop capable of managing everyday office tasks, heavy rendering applications, and casual gaming, the Inspiron 16 Plus could be an ideal choice. While it may carry a higher price tag depending on its configuration, its impressive hardware performance justifies the cost. The 16-inch screen’s 60Hz refresh rate enhances the laptop’s smooth operation. Furthermore, its long battery life makes it a great pick for travelers and those who are frequently mobile.
